Will tractor be big enough?

I'm looking for a tractor to run the spreader in the spring and fall and rake hay in summer. I have a knight 1040 spreader with hydraulic apron and endgate. Don't want to break the bank will a 706 IH handle the spreader. Use a 886 right now I found a couple reasonably priced 706 and 806. I know 806 will handle it no problem. I know a diesel would be better but anybody have experience with 706 or 806 gasses?

I had a 706 gasser. Good enough tractor. Had quite an apatite for gas. Put a lot of hard hours on it as that was my main tillage tractor at the time. Only thing I did to it was have the valves ground. They make horrible loader tractors with that screwed up shift pattern.

Love my Gas Farmall 806. I use it with a Westendorf TA 26 loader with no real trouble or difficulty. Our land is flat and open. I don’t farm full time. But it has been trouble free for 27 years now. Think it’s about 90 hp. Always starts.

Both will be thirsty, but I think if you do not use them much, and need to start in winter gassers are better.

Hp to pull the spreader is important, and the overall weigh to be able to handle the weight of the loaded spreader behind it. Not much of a concern if your land is flat, but not something to ignore if your farm is hilly. A loaded manure spreader can push a tractor around like a toy when going down a hill. Could push the tractor through the fence, or cause the tractor/spreader combination to jackknife, possibly overturning the tractor.
The other main consideration would be hydraulic flow rate. As you state your spreader has a hydraulic apron, check the hydraulic flow capacity required to operate your manure spreader. While I am not familiar with the model spreader you have mentioned, I will show a picture of my Case 930 with the Hagendorn , which has a hydraulic powered push gate, not an apron. The 930 Case is right about 85hp with a 12 gal hydraulic pump, and weighs near 10,000 lb. I wouldn’t want any less tractor on this spreader. The engine has the power, but the tractor is nearing the weight limit, and you know that spreader is back there.

You still have the option not to completely fill the spreader when using the smaller tractor. Just load the spreader to a reasonable load for the tractor pulling it.
