1963 International 340 Utility

72Ford2000

New User
I recently bought a '63 IH 340 Utility and an IH 2000 to go put on it. I think I have my mounting brackets dreamed up but have to fabricate them yet. What I'm having a hard time with is how best to power the hydraulics. My tractor has the internal 12GPM pump, 1 Hydra touch valve to ports on the mid/left (hope to eventually run to the rear with that port) and the Tell-a-depth adjustment put onto it as well as a 3pt "kit". It doesn't have the factory power steering though I may want to try to add it once the loader is on. Anyone have similar setups and suggestions. I could cut into the rear hydrolics that run the 3 pt. with a priority valve or I could buy the IH 9 GPM engine driven pump and dedicate it to the loader but I am assuming I would have to run it wide open to have any speed with the loader. Any Suggestions are welcome. Thanks and Merry Christmas.

(quoted from post at 15:58:04 12/23/20) Could you the unit with 3 hydra touch
levers?

Tucker: I was wondering the same thing but I think since I have the 3 pt with the tell-a-depth ram that takes one of my Hydra-Touch Ports away. My understanding is that those were a 3 slot maximum and if one when to the tell-a-depth then it was a 2 slot maximum. That being said if I could get the parts, I have one there now and should be able to add in a hydra touch control valve. I know where I can get the vale bodies online but I can't find the levers, linkage etc. anywhere.

Rusty: Any chance you know where a guy could get the linkage and handles?
As you sit on the tractor, from right to the left, the first two positions are taken and "blank" is in the "third" position next to what I believe is the pressure regulator. I believe that information is relevant to get the appropriate linakge and hydra touch valve handle.

Has anyone ever drilled a "blank", as referenced above, to allow an additional port to be hosed/hard piped to a generic spool valve?

Thanks and it's great talking to you guys. Have read y'alls post for years but had never logged in.

My neighbor has a 340 row rope with 3
levers, I will get some photos of it for
you tomorrow, it has one lever set up for
the fast hitch and the other 2 go to ports
on either side of the engine.

Buy a Massey loader and tractor and you will have a much better design. My Dad way back in the 50's had a Ferguson with a loader on it and traded it for a new IH 300 utility withe a IH loader mostly because he had the $ to do so. He said it was a backward move. The IH was very unhandy and was no comparison to a Ferguson. It didn't take him long to have a new MF in the shed to replace it. He talked about that story for years.

The steering on a 340,utility, isn't a very good set up,and with out power steering,it isn't going to last, and if you tear that out, you r really going to have a problem,to get parts ect, i had a 340,with a loader, and M with a Farmhand F-10, the M would do more on accident than that 340 every though of doing, sold it too a neighbor, and he toke the loader off, uses it for other garden jobs, and likes it, and mine had factory power steering!

i totally agree, they are not a front end loader tractor. at least step up to the 560. anything from 460 and down is useless. i am talking internationals not farmall's

Here is a lot of experience trying to help you (78 years) about 50+ in the farm implement industry.
Save your time and money, you are going backward putting a loader on that tractor. Take the pile and
make a trade or something or at least leave the loader lay. The steering sector on those are just
not stout enough for loader and it will be almost impossible to gathered up enough stuff to fix your
tractor. Not trying to be nasty just trying to save you some heartache. Take it for what is is
worth .

no i dont but all that can be made. if you want 2 hyd. outlets you need 2 valve body's. if you want 3 outlets , you need 3 valve body's.
plus i am not following your" blank" theory.

Yes you can stack the valves,it is a pain to redo the steel line on the valves. I have seen several with a manual 1/4 turn shutoff valves at the rear ports. You turn them off and the FH is locked solid but the loader works, with a T plumbed in.

BTW, I agree, I would never put a loader on that tractor and the chance of finding a PS sector of a conversion are slim and very slim.

Thanks everyone for the responses and input. I guess I should say that this tractor isnt planned to get worked super hard. I got a good deal on both it and the loader. I have access to construction equipment should the need arise. It will be to move gravel, snow, mulch, on occasion.(flat lander from central IL) Rear mower/rotary blade for about 5 acres, plow and disc. About an acre garden every year. Im just looking to make what I have work for hobby intent. I have a 99 New Holland TC33D that is my primary mower:tractor but for no more loader work than I intend to do and the cost to put a loader on it I started poking around and tripped on the 63 and a loader. When I saw what I could get them for and did some research I couldnt pass it up. Now Im just trying to get it up and running so it can do what little I have to do at my place. Maybe someday I can upgrade to a bigger/better setup but for what they are going for vs. what Ive got in these I can afford to at least get these paired.

Our local high school Ag farm had a 340 industrial with loader. The biggest POS I have ever run in my entire life.(and I''ve driven a lot of tractors LOL). It was impossible to
steer, that was the biggest issue, there were others.Like the other poster said,an M with an F11 is way superior. Dont waste your time and money. Your 340 is just fine by itself, around
the place, but find another tractor for your loader.
