Made it back today with the plow. You were right. I had room for an extra bottom on that 20' trailer. Wish that IH plow was heavier as parts of Hwy 45 felt like a wagon trail.

Thought of you when I was picking up my plow as there was a White 548 in nice shape sitting not too far from my 540.

Regards & good talking to you!

Mike

No sir, 4x14 IH 540 with the on land hitch. Which makes me want to kick myself. Just had the wheels turned dish out on the 806 & now the darned things are too wide. Need 30" - 32" from tractor centerline to tread centerline & now have 39". Had 32" before they were flipped around right before I found & bought the plow. Go figure, eh?

Mike

I didn't know anyone ever produced an on land hitch on a four bottom plow. I reconfigured a White four bottom to pull on land, but it never pulled right. I concluded that there was no way to get the line of draft correct with a plow that narrow, and the tractor so far offset to the left. You could tell the plow was heavy on the right side of the tractor, the right tire started showing excessive wear, and it was difficult to keep from slipping into the furrow.

That seems to be the way things go isn’t it ? Nice plow though I’ve plowed thousands of acres with an IHC 550 semi mount they are good plows .

sv, the second number in that series was the number of bottoms- ie, 540 4 bottom, 550- 5 bottoms, 560- 6 bottoms. nice plows. I plowed many acres with a 550 behind an 806 and then 826 hydro. pic from 1973.

I was surprised to see that setup on there too. Will probably set it up to run as an in furrow plow. However, I have 14" bottoms & 18" rear tires on the 806. Not sure how that's going to work, but I just may have to make do.

Mike

I have never heard of 4x14 on land either,5x16 works best with a narrow wheatland tractor, then u dont have to mess with the wheels, my 806 Farmall was a little to wide yet!But we pull mostly the 70 series pull type plows!

In the 60's my cousin got a brand new AC D17IV. It had 18.4x28 tires. All he had for a plow was 3x14 fully mounted JD three point he had used on a JD60. He was concerned about the same issue, but it worked just fine.

After looking things over today, I figured out the bar with the 3pt pins is the only thing that would get the designation of an on land setup. That works in my favor in terms of adjustment as the in furrow hitch bar has fewer holes in it. The way it sits now, I can slide the bar to the left by two holes & that should put my rear tire right in the furrow without messing with the wheels. Should work out good.

Good to know. I figured out today, the bar with the 3pt pins is the only thing that would get the designation of an on land setup. That works in my favor for getting the wheel in the furrow as there are more holes to work with. That same bar would have to be about 6" longer if I wanted to run on land.

Mike

It will work fine I have 480 80 38 rear tires which are a half inch wider than an 18.4.38 and ran them in a 14 inch furrow for a lot of years

That’s a great picture . I didn’t know that on the model numbers . Looks like you have coulters and everything I was always amazed at how much the trash clearance the 550 had
