3pt Stump Grinder experiences.

With harvest all done and very little snow in north Central Wis. I have been cleaning out fencelines and trees overhanging my fields. I am considering buying a 3pt.stump grinder. I have several Oliver tractors to power this machine. Looking for something in the 50-90 Hp capacity. Any tips on a good, or bad machine. Thank you Steve.

For an isolated stump or two, its OK- but if you have a whole fence line to do, I'd just hire a guy with a good-size excavator, and get it done. I had a guy with a 4-71 Detroit powered grinder do 4 fir stumps, about 2 feet in diameter. It wasn't as fast as I anticipated (and a 3 point would be much slower), and the grindings are hard to deal with, if you want to do anything with the ground. Just about have to dig them out and replace with dirt, as the grindings won't rot for a couple of years. A good man on a decent size excavator can take a swipe at the roots on each side, then pluck the stump out of the ground and pile it for burning. Much cleaner operation.

I just bought a used Miller Pro 150 three point stump grinder, needs three valves to operate it, a 1000 RPM 90-150 PTO tractor to run it. It will cut BOTH ways left and right, will cut at least 12" deep below ground level, and cutting wheel will extend 16" inches. Fellow I got it from cleared 90 acres, between 400-500 stumps total, and area is now a hayfield. I was looking at the Quick Attach line made in Minnesota before I found this one. If I recall Miller sold the line to RIKO UK Ltd. There are some you tube videos of several grinders in action. Some three point grinders only cut one way..
