i broke the spear yesterday so had a little job this morning .not claiming to be a welder but i get by. its a handy thing to just bolt on the bucket and go. i know it will be weak at the weld but its working so far. and cows are munching on their lunch.

If you continued to do passes like that one till it was completely welded out it will hold. That's not a bad weld, maybe a little too fast but it sure looks good to me and I've been welding for 50 years

I believe it will hold but for material that thick I always V it out with the torch and immediately start welding. That way the material is pre heated and less likely to break by the weld.

Been there and done that , I have two when one breaks I put the other one in. Mine are frontier, Agr-Supply is where I bought last one for a third of what John Deere wants for one. I haven't broke the one from Agri-Supply YET.

Thanks. Yes all passed like that and wire brushed clean it appears pretty hard steel. I purposely did not get it red hot welding it and took my time. Gave it lots of peening for stress relief. I was thinking to put a gusset on the top for strength but don’t know if it would benefit due to the hardness ?Used 7018. I don’t do much welding only when have fix something.

If you can weld that spear so it does not break you are a better welder than me (and many are). I broke one years ago and tried welding it up. It looked so terrible that I ordered a new spear right away. Mine is a dedicated attachment for the front end loader with one long spear and two short ones on the side made by Westward. The replacement spear has been ok. Or maybe I am just more careful now.

My front end would not take those big heavy bales. I wanted to put the 4 rib tires on but by the time I found Rims and tires I just stayed with the 3 ribs. With a bale they squat down Need a front wheel assist , actually Kobota skid steer would be my first choice. But cheaper to sell the cows.

That is a fine looking weld. correct rod, good cleaning and peening. it will be stronger there than the rest of the spear. Jim

I’m going to a 10:00 15 these are 7.5l 15 i think . These are two year old bales 1500 pounds . The rounds are this years crop and scale average is 1580

thanks, as long as it holds my bales, its the bounce over rough that breaks them . just idle along now.

I broke a spear moving big bales, you have to have them speared all the way or it'll put to much pressure on the spear.
Never cared much for those bucket spears, that extra distance out puts a lot of pressure on the front axle and tires plus you need more weigh on the back.
Most of our loaders have quick attach buckets and we got spear attachments to fit, loaders that didn't have quick attach buckets we made a back plate with a universal spear attachment to pin on.

These are my main hay movers.

6610 Series II

I actually installed a 3930 engine and ps pump on that Montana/Farmtrac along with a 3610 hydraulic pump and a 3000 wiring harness I modified.
