If you try one you better be prepared to buy one

Neighbors had one and soon traded it. Said it was the hardest riding tractor they ever had. Another neighbor bought one used and has had it for years. Go figure.

When I was in Highschool (mid 80's) I would help a neighbor farmer who had one. It was very jerky on the steering from what I remember. It was a little scary driving it down the road at speed.

(quoted from post at 19:50:13 12/19/20) What did you decide to do with it ?

Nothing, yet. Gonna try to get it in the shop this winter and split it at the clutch, depending upon what I find there I may split it again and replace the TA.

I have some photos, but not here, will try to remember to grab the memory card so I can post them.

There were several in the neighborhood, until recently even.

Kinda cool thing, unfortunately they weren’t refined and IHC was in too poor a shape to get them redesigned and perfected. The later models were some better but just too little too late.

They weren’t weighted right, you had to play with that a lot to get them to not power hop.

They weren’t built real sturdy, kinda out of recycled parts. They were not a big 4wd, lot of farmers tried to make them a heavy puller; they were actually an early version of a lighter front wheel assist. You killed them if you put duals on the front end, too many tried and broke stuff.

Biggest issue is 6 row equipment was the thing in those days, and they couldn’t hardly turn around in 8 rows much less 6. Their target was row crop, and it couldn’t turn short enough.

Neighbor cultivated with it, that was kinda interesting, 6 row cultivator on the back of an articulated.......

I’ve never even sat In one always liked them . There has been three different ones around here all the white cab ones

The farm I worked for in High School had one (white cab) and 3 articulated Whites (2 4-150,4-270)... Id run the whites over the 2+2 any day.. The IH pivots in front of you.. that was just weird, It didn't turn as good as the whites and the shift linkage just sucked.. It was used to cultivate potatoes (6 row) and pulled a 2 row main digger and run a vine straw chopper. I do remember it being worked on quite a bunch... It and one of the 4-150's got traded in on the first 7140 magnum..

They could run circles INSIDE the MFWA tractors of the day, though. A 1086 or 1486 with a Coleman or Elwood mechanical front wheel assist was truly a "give me 40 acres and I'll turn this rig around" machine.
