How about a inch black iron pipe the same one mile length in the hot sun. charge it with 100 lbs of air. It will keep building pressure from the suns heat. Hook the line to a turban turning a generator. free electricity. Sounds good. Stan

Seems to me that you have a 100 lbs of pressure that would increase in the heat of the sun, but you would have NO air flow.

There is a limit. Where is the energy coming from for the 100psi ?

A few comments:

1 - The only "free" energy is from pressure rise above the original 100 psi pipe charging pressure.

2 - The energy gained is actually solar - heat from the sun raising the temperature of the pipe and air within.

3 - A calculation shows amount energy that could be extracted from such a setup is modest - only a few hundred watt-hours (or fraction of a kilowatt hour if you prefer) for each charge/blowdown cycle.

I'll spare you the drudgery of the math...

Add a few hundred more feet of pipe out in the Sun before the water goes into your water heater.
