Row Crop???

(quoted from post at 14:34:41 12/17/20) What makes a tractor a row crop tractor? I always thought it was the narrow front, but I see a lot of wide fronts being called row crop also. Thanks, Ellis

We had a fairly extensive discussion on this maybe a week and a half ago. As Charlie says it is mainly adjustable axles, and non-row crop have gotten to be pretty rare.

In addition to what has been said already, row crop tractors usually have a flat operator's platform instead of the straddle mount. There are exceptions, most notably the Ford 7xx, 9xx and the 4 cylinder 2000 and 4000.

Not sure about other brands but Fords early row crops had offset rear axles and longer spindle drops to gain more clearance over the crop.
Later models used taller rear tires and longer spindle drops, this gave the tractor 6-8" more ground clearance in order to cultivate taller crops
Adjustable front axles and adjustable rear wheels where available on Ford tractors several years before they introduced a row crop model.

I thought there was "row crop" with adjustable axles.
Then basically the same tractor with much taller rear tires and extra tall front spindle drops called a "high crop"???

This subject got beat to death a couple of weeks ago. Really, it's up to the manufacturer to decide what they want to call their tractor. In the case of the hundred-series Fords, the "row crop" tractors have final drives in the rear and a pedestal front end to raise the entire tractor a few inches higher than the standard. The pedestal front end can accept either a narrow or wide front axle. I think the "standard" hundred series tractors have adjustable axles, so adjustability isn't necessarily the only criteria to be a row crop tractor.
