Ford 3000 Air Filter Removal

Hello!

I've got a 1971 Ford 3000 that I'm trying to clean the air filter on. I removed the blue cover, but the actual filter cylinder seems to be stuck. Is there a trick to getting this thing out?

Thanks,
-K

Hey Yesterday's Tractors, it's your URL!

Its that you are a new user. A few get by there is a spam filter, it normally requires having 5 or more posts on record before it allows pictures to be posted. You can go down to the Site Comments Forum and ask YT Support to allow you to post pictures before that if you want.

Wiggle the filter. It is likely the rubber seal in the other end of the filter cartridge is stuck to the housing.

Thanks, I asked them to open up permissions.

Regarding the filter, I've wiggled it quite a bit, and put a channel lock on it to try twisting, no go. I'll wiggle it some more though. I was worried about doing it too much and breaking something.

I should have asked, is this the dry horizontal mounted air filter or the oil bath type filter?

Ok, your picture posted while I was typing. It is just stuck, likely been in there a long time. Replace it, don't plan on cleaning it. You may end up compromising it to get it free.

OK. Once I have a new one to replace it
with, can I just reef on the old one until
something pops loose, or is there a
permanent part of the tractor that I should
be careful of?

Those filters aren't cheap but they can be washed and dried according to the manual. Looks like your tab is flattened out in the picture. I clean mine periodically and
it usually a bit sticky. Just keep wiggling and pulling. The rubber grommet on the inner end slips on to a tube.

When you get it out check, to see if the seal is damaged or any of the seal is still stuck to the housing. There should be an inner/safety filter mounted inside that one. It should not get damaged in removing the outer filter. When you get the outer filter out, remove and check the inner one over closely. Those are normally ok to reuse, if the outer one hasn't failed, or it is breaking up from age.

It is yours to do what you wish, but when I enlarged your picture from what I could see of the part number and checking the parts book you should be able to get a filter at a parts store for $30.00 +/-. I also see appears to be a date of May87. Personally I would not clean and reuse that old filter, especially as hard as it is coming out.

(quoted from post at 19:08:11 11/18/20) Are you saying that an air filter should be
replaced every 3 decades, wether it needs
it or not?!?

As I posted: It is yours to do what you wish, I don't lose or gain a nickel, whatever you chose to do.

(quoted from post at 20:27:03 11/18/20) That was sarcasm. I will definitely get a
new one. 33 years is a good run for an air
filter.

Likewise. I thought so, but one never can be sure what some people think. If it has in fact been in there 33 years that could explain why it is stuck. It looks like the YT Store has that filter for 19.95 and the New Holland parts book site shows 40.00, so none of these option seem expensive to me. If you can get 30 years out of a new one, that's only a bit over a buck a year if you have to get the NH one.

I managed to get the old filter out and
replace it with a new one.

I didn't see any inner filter as you
mentioned though.

This is what it looked like when I pulled
the old one out.

Thanks,
-K

Some had inner filters some didn't. Apparently yours didn't, which is not a problem. Be sure the area where the filter seal fits to the housing is clean and dry before installing the new filter.

Gas or diesel? Diesel air filters should not be be opened up unless they have run long enough in dirty enough conditions to accumulate dust. Opening a filter is considered hazardous to the engine. The Cat engine manual for my 2003 International 5900i said KEEP YOUR DIRTY FINGERS OFF THE FILTER UNLESS THE RESTRICTION INDICATER TELLS YOU TO SERVICE IT!!!!

(quoted from post at 23:36:41 12/15/20)
It's a 3000 with gas engine, most of them didn't have restriction gauges.

Correct, it's a gas.

Alright, thanks everyone! I look forward to replacing this filter again at the end of 2053.

With that filter in the side of the hood, it's gas.
I took the factory filters out of a 1991 Ford 4630 diesel this year.
The complaint was: "It lacks power." Paper filters, inner and outer,
were a bit over $100, but sure beat the price of the engine rebuild
they were told by a shop that it needed.

Royse, Amateurs can take comfort in seeing that "pro" mechanics can also insist on bypassing easy fixes like bad cable connections or obstructed fuel lines or air filters and go straight to major or exotic problems like "jumped" timing or "viscous" oil, worn out piston rings.

Agreed showcrop. Amateur or pro, we're all human. Mistakes are made.
In this case it worked out for me. Their overpriced estimate allowed me to buy the tractor cheaply.
