John Deere R

I posted this on the John Deere tractor page, but didn’t get any response, so I thought I’d try here.

I had the injector pump on my R professionally rebuilt about 80 hours ago. I recently discovered diesel in the oil, the transfer pump was bad, so I fixed that. I noticed the injector pump was leaking from both pumps, but especially the no.2 pump. So I took it back to the guy who rebuilt it, he found a broken washer in the no.2 pump, he fixed it. I put it back on, it didn’t leak as fast, but it did still leak. The guy said it’s normal for those pumps to leak a little. Is that true? Also how much is it supposed to leak?
Thanks

well the guys with experience are disappearing like the 2 bangers. i would agree should not leak. sure dont need thin oil. maybe if had one apart and took a look at one might find something out.

The guy that told you it is suppose to leak is full of it. Look in a green magazine for Garry Power ad.....he knows the R fuel system.

The two companies that made FIPs for the old 2 cyl Johns were Bendix and American Bosch. To the extent that Am Bosch is still in business they no longer manufacture spare parts for those old pumps. and certaily Bendix does not.

The aftermarket companies that are making parts for these don't have the best quality control.

There is a special made double bevel, copper washer that either Am Bosch or Bendix (maybe both) used to seal the delivery valve to the dely valve holder. In particular, it is difficult to get one of these aftermarket washer so seal. Likely your rebuilder didn't take enough time pressure testing the pump(s). Our old tool and die guy said that the defective washers were made with bearing bronze and not copper and didn't have enought crush to conform to the sealing lands.

He hand turned out a bunch of these copper washers on a lathe that we used in the shop I work in. Sadly the tool and guy died and the washers have all been depleted.

Ask your rebuilder about this. We did get the bronze washers to seal it just took a few tries.
