Allis Chalmers D17 Series 4 vs Massey Ferguson 175 multipower.

Which was the better tractor and why? Both 3pt hitches. Power director vs multipower. Gas vs diesel.

Just curious - thanks!

If I could find a nice D17IV I'd buy it in a heartbeat, but that's nostalgia speaking. The AC has a robust hydraulic system. The MF, not so much. I think the AC could outwork the MF, but the MF is only going to sip fuel. Ironically, when the D17 became the One Seventy, 170, and 175, it used the same engine as the MF175. Different versions, ratings, etc, but first the 4.236, then the 4.248.

I'd take the MF 175 diesel hands down, must have the twelve speed MP option, and auxiliary hydraulic pump and two spool valve. Biggest reason is because the MF PTO will keep running without stopping when you want to stop and back up. Can't do that with the D17-170-175..

My buddy had a 175 Diesel. MF Excellent engine. Hyd sucked. 3 point didn't have good way of holding the arms from swinging. He tried to mow with a disc mower. Had to make a bracket to keep lift arms from going to top. Cylinder valves wouldn't work if 3 point lever wasn't all the way up and lift arms trying to lift! Same way with loader. Kinda like using a early d17 or wd45. On one. Pto on a D17 does suck also. Stops when foot clutch is disengaged. 175 pto is not independent either. But continuous. Have to stop to engage it. Power steering on a 175 cylinder just moves a few inches. Any wear is to much cant hardly drive it fast. I would rather have a D17 IV gas with a loader you could order it with a directional shuttle. Another friend has a 175 Allis with a shuttle and loader. It's a gas also. Awsum little tractor. But a 275 MF had better hyd.

You can shift a AC from forward to reverse with the hand clutch. Just need to be fast! Done it over half my life. But that doesn't mean I like it. I like the electric button on our JD.

Never been around a MF 175, spent some time on a D 17. AC is a nice tractor, didn't like setting astraddle of the tranny. I think setting on a seat with a platform for your feet would be far more comfortable for the operator.

The MF 175 has two PTO options, a two stage foot clutch that works fine IF it's kept adjusted correctly. There's also a completely independent hydraulic PTO clutch available. The auxiliary hydraulic pump option is preferred so the main three point pump is not needed for cylinder use, as some early MF are set up for. The LATE MF 175 has the same hydraulic system the MF 265-275 has..
