Got a call about some 3 cylinder Ford engine stuff I have on CL.
Young fellow can get this 1980s Morbark chipper for free if he wants it.
I don't recognize it though it does remind me of the German built, overhead cam 4 banger I had in a Pinto back in the early 80s.
My parts won't help him but if I could help him ID it I would do that.
Thanks

Yeah with the rubber band toothed timing chain. Was surprised how well that little sucker held up. I bought one for the kids to drive to school. They tore it up but it took awhile. Too bad the Pinto had fuel tank problems....course GM trucks had that problem back in the '70's too.

I had a 2.0L Pinto engine in a mid engine dune buggy.
Bone stock with ana aftermarket cam. It was a screamer.

The 2.0L used in the Pinto has 10 bolts in the valve cover.
The later 2.3L has 8 bolts.

The 2.3L was most prevalent in the 1980's

I agree Pinto got a bad rap from the media. Compared to the Vega, Colt, and Gremlins they were competing with, they were very enduring cars.

I remember way back when one of the major news networks (ABC maybe) did a fake news story (yup, all the way back then) about how the GM pickups would burst into flames when hit in that fuel tank side complete with video. GM did some investigating and found the truck they used (supposedly lost) and put it on display showing the rocket engine the network installed to get it to flame up because the tank wouldn't ignite when hit.

That engine has one of the easiest-to-change timing belts out there. I'll be doing a timing belt change on my 2.3 Ford Ranger soon.
The engine in the photo could use a timing belt cover, however.

Ford did produce that engine as an industrial engine known as the LSG-423. 423 = 4cyl, 2.3L

I remember watching that story with parents who were sad because there boy wanted that truck for his birthday then got in a crash and got burned . It was the one with Barbra Walters

The so called gas tank problem was, the filler neck didn't go into the tank far enough. If rearended the neck would pullout and dump gas. Then there was a bolt on the rear axle that was aimed at the tank that could cause a spark in the fore mentioned rearend.

Yeah, I changed one in the parking lot at work for a friend after work.
