Front tire sizes

I have a 'quiktach' loader on my Super M.It has 6.50x16 tires on ot. As said before, those are too small for a loader, even on a tractor that only sees occasional loader useage.Leaning toward 7.50,or 9.5x15.Any way I go I'll have to make special rims to bolt to the old IH cast center hub. That's no big deal.My concern is with a wider tire, will it be steerable? Steers pretty decent now. Eventially I'd like to put power steering on. But till then,it needs to be steerable.Dont like the 7.50 x16 on the IH rim because it squeezes em in too much.

Steve, can u snag a 706, or 806 front end to put under that tractor, that would be optimum! I never thought those three bolt wheels were meant for a loader!!

I have the same on my 620 JD. It has good power steering but turns easy with a full bucket. I had little tires on it and couldn't hardly turn it so the bigger ones are better in my opinion.

i presume u have a wide front. i think the hubs would fit from a super 6 then you would have 750x18 tires. this would be the least amount of work.

I would guess if yo are going to use the old 3 bolt cast wheels and rims. I would want the ones from a 400or so tractor where the casting is flat on the outside instead of the recessed bolt set up. They are a heavire casting out by the rim. Also just widening the old rims would make them fit the tires fine. If it has a wide front then the taller the tire the better for rolling resistance and would probably steer easier than those short wide tires like the 9.5L-15's and wider. I find truck tires will carry the guff better than implement and tractor tires. Old nylon 7.50-16, 8 or 10 ply truck tires last best on our loader.

The three bolts are much stronger than any 6-bolt, because of leverage. Having the bolts out at the rim gives the weight less leverage on them. In near the hub, there's a lot more leverage on the lug bolts.

I'd save the effort of welding up special wider rims to fit the IH frt wheel castings and just put Char-Lynn power steering on. Hard steering problem solved.
Dad's '51 M has been a loader tractor since it was brand new Christmas Eve Day 1951. It was also the picker tractor from fall '52 till about 1967 or '68. The power steering was added around the mid-1950's.

Both the M and my '54 Super H have loaders on them and have always had 6.00x16 ft tires. I've considered welding up frt rims like you were describing but 6x15 rims for 7.5Lx15. Haven't seen the need to take that project past the "Thinkin' about it" stage.

You put power steering on your Super M you will thank yourself every time you use it.
