I have a New Holland TC40D, Sometimes when you turn the key, it was just a click, after a few trys it starts, I put a new starter and solenoid on it, same thing, the posts on the battery are clean as are the clamps, I am at a loss. Thanks for any help i may get,

The battery was clean and I did clean it again, its shiny now, no corrosion at all . And the ground clamp on the tractor is just as clean, Could the awitch be bad? and thanks for the reply's

What type of clamps?
Check clamps for a crack.
Seen it on both lead ones and the sheet metal ones.

Check cables up stream of battery ends for corrosion hiding under the insulation. Bend the cable as you feel for crunchyness inside indicating the wires are turning into copper oxide.
Especially at the bottom of loops as moisture getting inside will accumulate there.

Yes the ignition switch could be the problem as well as any safety switches. One way to check is to take and on the starter solenoid you should have the 2 big posts and one or 2 small posts. Be 1000% sure it is out of gear and take a piece of wire and go from the battery post on the solenoid and them touch the small post. If it spins over that way then good chance you have a switch problem some place

Check the condition of the battery cable ends. There is always an inch or so of wire before the ends, that are unprotected, and get all rusty causing a terrible connection.I just had that happen to my ford new holland mower, and when it was wet,it wouldn't start and would smoke off the plastic battery terminal covers. There was enough cable,so I just cut of the rusted spot and replaced the end.It always start right up now.

Is that hydrostatic? On my Farmall 65A sometimes that will happen. Try it a few more times and it pops off. I may have mine narrowed down to clutch safety switch. When it acts up I take screw driver handle and tap on switch and it starts. Problem is it may have started that time anyway. Them kinda problems can be a puzzler sometimes.

interesting: Same problem with my Case D40, at times a number of clicks before it rolled and started, did all the switches and limits and connections...did a load test on the battery and it was dropped like a stone. Starter load was enough to allow a click but no power to roll it, just lucky it was starting after a few clicks i guess. New battery and all good since then.
hope it helps.

Thank you all for the help, Now I have something to check. Just lucky I didnt do this back when it was warm out, It sure aint now, Thanks again

I am NOT familiar with your exact tractor, just thought I'd mention many tractors/machines/vehicles nowadays have a relay between the key switch/safety switches and the actual starter solenoid.

That way a relatively small current through those switches activates the relay, and it's contacts switch the actual current drawn by the starter solenoid.

If your machine uses such a relay it may be failing.

I replaced one just a few days ago on a DEERE 6400 tractor AFTER the owner had replaced the starter and solenoid $615) with no improvement.

Make sure the brushes in the starter aren't so worn and short they only make light or no contact with the armature.

safety neutral switch . does it have one??? my combine does the same thing, but i know what it is and just re-step on the clutch a time or two and it then cranks over.

Might check the ground. On my tractor I had to run an additional ground strap from the negative side of the battery to the starter.

Its a hydro drive, and it does have safety switches, Tomorrow I will go try out the ideas you guys gave, thank you

Hope this makes sense. My F2000 Kubota was doing the same thing. New starter and solenoid was no help. jm provided me with the answer. I wired in a second solenoid. Took the wire from the key switch to the original solenoid to activate the new solenoid. Ran a #10 wire from the positive post on the battery thru the new solenoid to the post I removed the the key wire from on the original solenoid. 20 dollar fix and have had 0 problems for 4 years. Now have a spare starter and solenoid. jm said that over the years the safety switches reduced the current to the solenoid enough to cause intermittent failure. Try running a jumper wire from the pos on battery to the key post on solenoid. Bet it starts every time. Adding the second solenoid keeps all the safety switches in play.

Like Wore Out stated, There is a small black relay that activates the solenoid, very common issue for these to fail. I have replaced several. Next time it clicks, tap on or rattle the relay. should be located near the starter
