Unstyled B Hood removal

Going to attempt to take the hood of an unstyled JD B today. Seems pretty straight forward except for the steering. It looks like I will have to take the steering shaft out. Anyone have any pointers on how it’s done? Or tips for removing the hood? Also the support bracket where the steering shaft goes through is oblong from wear. Is there a bushing made that I can put in there to tighten it up. Thanks

I can not say about the removal.I can say you would need to core the old casting out to round then put a new bushing in to fit the shaft. The shaft will also undoubtedly be worn, so it will still have some play when you get it in place. Might be able to braze the hole up some then fit to shaft by boring it out. Or could pour solder in the hole with a form in the hole and a plug of some sort on the bottom with it laying down to hold the solder in. It would work like a poured rod bearing in and old GM splasher.

Remove the steering wheel, 2 bolts on the cap at the front of the pedestal. turn the shaft and it will screw itself out.

The steering shaft has 2 identical ball bearings, one on each side of the worm gear. When you reinstall the shaft put some heavy grease on the inner one so it'll stay in the bearing cup. The cover cap should go all the way to the pedistal by hand. Don't use the cap screws to draw it up. If the cap doesn't go all the way by hand, the inner bearing has slipped out of place. Remove the shaft enough to reposition that bearing. If you try to draw the cap into place using the cap screws you'll crush the bearing cage.

A couple weeks ago I took the hood and fuel tank off my unstyled A without removing the steering column. There was enough room under the steering column to wiggle it out. Not sure if a B would have enough room or not.
