Sunflower seed

What is with the price of sunflower seed this year? Was buying it for under $15 per 50 pound bag last year and now it is up over $23. Is there that much demand?

It might be the cost of trucking. Trucks are in big demand. Most of is grown out in the Dakotas, Minn, maybe someone out there knows more about it. I looked into growing sunflowers at one time but was advised against it by a friend who likes to grow unusual (to this area) stuff. He had problems marketing (selling) it.

The guy that grew is got $16 to $20 per hundred weight for it, the rest goes to the folks between you and him.

I grew 5 acres one year as a test,, the starlings moved in and cleaned out every seed in ten days

Yes, I remember being warned about that when I was studying up on growing them. I even looked at getting some propane cannons but then my friend warned me against them, so never got into it. I don't need starlings. Our old neighbor, Fritz, had starlings around his buildings. Once in a while he would sit in a rocking chair under a big elm tree with a loaded pump shotgun pointed straight up. When the starings would swarm in he would just pull the trigger and pump as fast as he could. Took out quite a few that way. (;>))

Around here it depends on the store. Rural King in Clarksville, TN sells it for around $14 for 40 lbs while Tractor Supply in Dickson TN (about 45 miles away) sells it for around $23 for 40 lbs. The birds, chipmunks, squirrels and deer at my place don't complain about the cheaper price.

Don't know about demand but just paid $22.99 In NH

Price at Menards in southern Minnesota has been around $22 for 50 pounds all fall. I did grab 200 pounds at about $18 per 50, and with an 11% rebate added on, a few weeks ago at Menards. I got four 40-pound bags last week at Mills Fleet Farm for $13.99 a bag. With lots of birds plus red and gray squirrels, I go through a lot in a hurry. It's shaping up to be an expensive (or should I say expensiver?) winter. (The squirrels are looking really plump this fall.)

14 miles west of Murray for me. Been to Dover many times. Eat at the cafe downtown plus Tn. Ridge restaurant and Bumpus Mills cafe.
