Stock vrs modifyed

I have an restored 'stock' F12 on rubber. 11x36 tires. I have my 'modifyed' F-12 with the 2.8 v6 and 13x26 combine tires. The 'hot rod' 12 weighs about 300lbs more than the restored one. AtA tractor pull last year,I pulled both.Guess which one out pulled the other? The restored stock one did!The hotrod screamed, throwed dirt and then spun out.The 'hotrod' needs to be kept wound up. It has no low end torque. It just falls on it's face. The stock tractor just dug in and walked till it ran out of power.I was totally amazed,so was the crowd. Our little antique club pulls on percentage basis, not distance. That lets everyone play on a level plane That prevents the 'big money' guys from winning it all. Lets the 'poor boys play on an equal footing.. Sometimes the old 'rust buckets acctually out pull the new high dollar 'restores/modifyeds.BTW,we dont give prizes or trophys. All you get if you 'win' is bragging rights for the day.My little 'bone stock' restored F12 won bragging rights that day! :)

Years ago at our local threshing show pull this old rusty Oliver 70 with stock sized tires out pulled the fancy tractors in its class year after year. His front end would come off the ground a few inches and he would slowly walk out the gate. It was fun to watch him

I remember as a kid I watched a 720 pull with with a bunch 4020s. The 720 guy put it in low and worked the throttle to keep the front up about a foot or so as he walked to the end of
the track. The 4020 guys tried to go fast and either spun out or ran out of power.

Neither this nor your experience surprise me. It isn't as exciting, but slow and steady can do a lot!

Back in the day, people pulled bigger implements slower, too.

A few years ago on a hard track and being in the largest class in the smaller weight transfer sled, there were a dozen in my class (I had a G John Deere) including a souped up 560 Farmall and a highly modified LA Case. I was last to pull. Most pulled to about the same place. The Farmall went about 50 feet past the group. The G has a fairly fast first gear and just luged down in the tough spot and when I got through that the weight on the sled was at the top and I pulled about 100' past where the 560 spun out. Did the same thing four times that weekend. Of course, different track conditions and the bigger sled would often give different results but that sure was a fun weekend.

Having seen that "modified" while it was being constructed, even though its pride is wounded, all it might need is better weight transfer/ballasting! Just being optimistic. Jim

Lots of that depends on the track. I can take my tractors to one pull and do pretty good. Move to a different track and I can't make it to the winners circle. Lots of difference in what goes into a modified pulling tractor engine. Just because you can "go fast" doesn't mean you will win. I have a modified Farmall H that runs very strong as long as you keep the rpm up. If the tires start to spin and you throttle down you have to be really careful or it won't recover when you throttle up. I also have a Farmall C that I built last year. I had the cam specifically ground for pulling. What a difference. You can throttle down and pull real slow through the soft stuff and then goose it and it will recover. It has a great power band.

Amazing what the engineers were able to do with a session of spit & whittle at the saloon.

Then work what was scribbled on the wet napkin out with a slide rule and drafting table the next morning!

LOL. I remember the first time I 'goosed' my hotrod f12. It almost bucked me off! Had I not been holding on tight it would have. The throttle got 'modifyed so that wont happen again.

I out pulled three hot rod cases and one international With my stock 3020 . They made a lot of smoke and noise but they couldn’t go anywhere .
