3 point hitch pins

So, as far as tractors and implements go I only know what I have had to use. I recently upgraded tractors to a JD 1520 and my old back blade 3 pt pins are too small for the 1520s hitch. Naturally I assume I can just buy bigger pins at my local farm supply. My old ones were 7/8" and the balls on the new tractor have a 1 1/8 hole. The big question is, is this what folks mean by different cat 3 points? Such as cat 1 or cat 3 or whatever?

I recently upgraded tractors to a JD 1520 and my old back blade 3 pt pins are too small for the 1520s hitch. Naturally I assume I can just buy bigger pins at my local farm supply. Yes, different categories, different pin sizes.

Cat 1 is up around 50+ hp.

Cat 2 is 60-120 or so hp.

Cat 3 is the big tractors, and then when the super big tractors came I think thry went to cat 4 even?

Each one has bigger pins, is wider between pins.

Except, then they came up with the Narrow, or N, sized. So a cat 3N has big pins like a cat 3, but they are spaced as wide as a cat 2. So you can start using the same
quick hitch with adaptors on different equipment.

If this sounds confusing, it is. There are about 6 different common possibilities.

Anyhow, if you have a cat 1 blade and you put it behind a cat 2 tractor, they make little sleeves, short pipes, you can put on your pins and work with the cat 2 tractor. Or
you can buy bigger pins, but then you have to find the type with the smaller threaded side to fit the holes in your blade...... some folk just let the little pins rattle around in
the bigger holes on the tractor arms.....

Your tractor likely has some sway chains or metal blocks or a bar with pins on each side that can be set differently for the narrower cat 1 width of your blade.

Now using a cat 1 blade with a cat 2 tractor is likely to greatly shorten the life of the blade, since it was designed for lower hp use, and now you can pour the wood to it
and really scoop a load with it, more power as Tim Allen would say. With similar end results.

change the ball at the end of the lift arms your tractor is not that big that it needs cat 3 pins you can buy the balls from Deere

Get sleeves for the tractor draft arms and change the tractor end of your top link to Category 2.

Or get a Category 2 top link to stay with the 1520 and get a sleeve bushing (1" OD x 3/4" ID) for the impliment end. I have a Cat 2 top link with a sleeve for Cat 1 welded into one end, saves chasing the sleeve. It may sound crude, but you could do the same to the draft arms if you are only going to have Cat 1 equipment pins.

I agree with bushings. On some implements I have had to cut them off to get pin in. Have seen some that are longer and pin goes through bushing also. Ran into problem with 560 with aftermarket 3 point Tractor end is cat 1 but I use it with cat 2 implement. I have one top link that is cat 1 on one end and cat 2 on the other.

The bushings look like a winner to me. Thanks for all the input! Yes, I'd like to buy a bigger blade now, one step at a time...

Can you post a picture of the 1520? Pa picked one up from a
fella that was getting divorced and needed the cash. He went
to look at a NH bale wagon and came home with both. That
little tractor got used every day. From snowblower,
balewagon, manure spreader, silage box, grinder mixer, buzz
saw,... you get the picture. It came without fenders so he built
some flat tops and a tube and plyboard heat houser and
through the year it got tucked in more than the others.

I dunno Aaron, are those 11Lx16's? While not stock of course, those are perfect for a loader tractor. Thats a sharp looking 1520, I hope
you get many years of service out of it. Handy as a shirt pocket.

Grease up the pins a little before you put the bushings on.
Amazing how fast they can rust and get stuck on there.

"Yes, I know they put the wrong size front tires on it."

Well yes and no.....yes on the diameter but no on the width. I had 9,00x15s on a 4010 with a Koyker after market, may have been a 7' bucket and they
were too narrow to hold up the loaded bucket in softer soils. 11.00s would have worked a lot better. Raising the front also helps you to sit back easier
against your back rest for a more comfortable ride...opinion.

My Woods HBL84-2 will take either a Cat 1 or Cat 2 hitch. I love that blade, BTW. I just checked the Woods web site and it looks like they've discontinued the HBL series, which is a real shame.

I was shopping around recently for 3-pt pins. I scoured the internet, then remembered that new TSC in town. But the best selection and by far the best prices were at our old Fleet Supply.

TSC is spendy!
