OT: 12v air compressor?

I know it’s not a replacement for a real compressor, but they are awful handy when running to the field and you find a flat trailer tire or the likes. First one I ever bought was a cheap one in a slime kit from Walmart. It’s still going years later, but it’s beyond done. I’ve actually bought several the last few years to replace it and they’ve all been crap and died almost immediately. Are any of them any good now? Any recommendations?? Been looking at some of the Viair’s, but man they get pricey for some of the bigger ones.

I have a combination jumper battery/compressor that the wife picked up at home depot. It has worked pretty well for me. I also have one that works with my Ryobi 18 volt tool batteries, it works great.

on uses the Air-Ride compressor off an old Cadillac.

I bought this one 20 years ago to keep in the truck in case we got a flat on one of the lawnmowers, truck, trailer ect, i cut the plug off and we just held the wires on a battery, truck or mower, it needs another wire its two short now..dont know why it got cut off..

I also have a cheap hf pancake compressor, and a cheap 1000w generator, I carried them in my truck for air out in the hay fields if needed. Was handy a few times.

I have a Husky that I bought at Home Depot for $24. Its rated at 150 PSI and does a good job of airing tires, but its primary use is to run my homemade foam marker system when spraying. For 3 years its run hours at a time without failure.

I got the Viair 00088 88P about 3 years ago. Don't know how I got along without it! I have a small lithium 12v battery that is very lightweight and lasts a long time. I use the battery to power the 12v compressor or any number of other 12v needs, such as remote 12v lighting.

One thing I can tell ya, it sure is a lot nicer taking the warm battery and compressor in a small tote bag (whether from house or warm truck cab) in the middle of Winter rather than hauling out a larger compressor!

For tractor tires, get a larger model. Mine is fine for front tires but you would want a beefier compressor for rears. Take care of it and you'll have a nice long-term investment.

And with Black Friday coming up, maybe you can find a deal.

ViAir are good units but yes expensive, Harbor Freight has a cheaper one but as said you get what you pay for.

These are things that can help regardless if you have a Vi Air or a cheapie

Use good heavy oversized cables and connections short as possible direct to the battery (if need be make your own versus thin wimpy ones)

Have the truck engine running so the alternator raises battery voltage

DUTY CYCLE as necessary run then let cool for brief periods

You only asked about 12 volt so I didnt get into inverter powered 120 volt units

I have a 12V compressor I bought from Northern Tool about 5 years ago for $100 has worked well, surprising how quickly it will pump up something like a tractor tire.

I had a Campbell-Hausfield like Jay shows for 20+ years, the hose finally rotted off. Picked up a "Slime" brand last fall to replace it at Walmart for about $20-25.00. Works good. I've never had one on a jump pack that worked very good. I think because the hose stays crimped up in it's storage compartment and they tend to leak.

I bought the Dewalt jump box with the air pump. Had it for about 5 years now. Works well on smaller tires. Use the box to power my diesel pump to refuel tractors.

Project Farm on youtube did a comparsion of several common 12V compressors a few months back. He was pretty hard on them.

From what I recall the Harbor Freight one came out on top.

If your going to be running your truck or tractor to keep the 12v power supply up, you might as well do a York OBA set up.

Use a GM/York compressor and convert it into an onboard air compressor.

The last cheap one(yellow) I bought at HF had a big sticker on the battery cable that says "Not to be used for automotive tires" or something to that effect. None of the other ones before said that. I guess I should be glad I only used it on a tractor tire, I wouldn't want the HF police chasing me down;-)
