EG ice maker

My GE ice maker quit working. They are quite expensive. Seams years ago all we had was little trays that you filled with water. Then put them the freezer section of the refrigerator, and they turned to ice. Then we had ice cubes. Or like my Grand Mother who lived on Dad's farm also, an ice truck came and dropped of a large chunk of ice to put in her ice box, if she needed a piece of ice, just chip off a chunk. She didn't have an ice maker. I think if I find a couple ice cube trays, I can save a lot of money. Wonder if the wife will go along with my idea? Stan

Years ago one night we were watching a little TV before bedtime and I heard something in the kitchen.
Went in there and water was pouring out the fridge door onto the floor.
I shut off the valve going to the ice maker and water dispenser and started using ice trays.
I will never use an ice maker again.
Can't imagine the floor damage we would have had if we had already gone to bed.

We have been buying ice at the grocery for years. The box in the freezer holds a large bag that lasts us quite a while and the dispenser still works. This was a temporary solution until the rest of the box died. Five years later, still running with a broken icemaker.

Did you look on Ebay?

They have several in the $40-60 dollar range.

I would not go a pre owned, but open box would be a safe bet.

it never ceases to amaze me what topics percolate up on this forum. A month ago the automatic ice maker in my Maytag fridge starting leaking small amounts of water in to the bin that the ice cubes fall in to. Seems like it might be a minor issue, but what it does is freeze up the auger that dispenser the ice cubes. Anyway stan, lots of options available for you- grab a bag of ice at the store and fill up your bin. Get the ice cube trays you are refferring to. You can go cheap and get the plastic ones that you twist to break the ice cubes out. Or you can go cheap and get the metal ones with the lever that we used as kids that will last for a month or two. Or, unbelievably, you can get really good metal lever trays as well. When I saw the good ones a few years back I was amazed as I did not think anything like that was made any more in our race-to-the -bottom culture we live in.

A few years ago my parents got up one morning to find a lake on their kitchen floor. Their GE ice maker was leaking. The whole bottom freezer was a block of ice. It took a full day before it thawed enough to get the freezer door open. When they finally got the mess cleaned up, the compressor was junk on the unit and they had to buy a new fridge. Now they use trays for ice cubes again. They didn't even tell me about it for a few days because when they bought it, I told them that would happen and I wouldn't take an ice maker if it was free.

After reading your post Chief, I have decided to go out today and start stocking up on ice cube trays. Steel ones and plastic ones both. I'm going to hoard them just like people are hoarding ammo. Before you know it, people will be willing to spend any amount to be able to make ice cubes safely. I am thinking that with the new government in power, they're going to show up (even north of the border) to confiscate all the trays and I'm going to be ready for those rascals ...... LOL !!!

I have one of those. Original icemaker quit in our Maytag bottom freezer fridge.
The "will fit" units can be difficult to get to work properly.

We never use ice cubes at home. Drinks are cold enough out of the fridge, and on my tractor, I use an insulated, magnetic cup holder. If I need more cold water I take a small playmate cooler with a couple of ice packs and my water bottles. I also have a cup holder with a jell pack that I freeze and it keeps a bottles cold for a long time. In fact, at restaurants, I order my drinks light ice, or no ice. More to drink! Mark.

Just fixed mine the timer motor was bad. Found a new replacement on eBay for about $20. A new ice maker was $195

Every issue I have had with a ice maker it was the water valve. All I had to do was check the resistance of the water valve whodathunkit...

BTW I go down to the local convenience (trash dump) center and rob one off a junker : ) Tho they are sometimes different they can be made to fit up...

OHMS law may be your friend...

To answer your question, if your wife is like my wife she prefers an ice maker. She will put up with the ice trays for a while but she will ask me when I'm going to get the ice maker fixed.
