trying to do a basic rebuild of the starter on my JD 620 LP without tearing it up- It has been eating these cheap starter switches for several months- I am trying to remove the drive gear but can't figure out how to remove the "Stop Ring". And YouTube wasnt any help.
Thanks

GOOD for you for attempting to do a tune up on your starter! Certainly can't hurt, but likely isn't the cause of the "saddle" starter switch from "The Land of Almost Right" failing.

Now back to your question, you need to knock the "retainer" that surrounds the snap ring "inboard", exposing the little round wire snap ring inside, then pluck the little round wire snap ring off of the armature shaft.

Once the "retainer" has been knocked "inward" and out of the way the snap ring can be removed from the armature shaft.

Here's a vid that may help a little???

the contact stud was worn down to nothing so I was going to replace it in hopes that it would help with the saddle switch issue so I figured I might as well put in new bushings, drive gear and brushes while I was at it. That and clean some of the rust and crud out of it.

Does that starter have a three piece stop on it? Like a washer would come off first, then the ring inside of a collar. If
it's like that use a deep socket to knock the collar off the snap ring, then work a small screw driver under the snap ring
so you can grab it with nice pliers and work it off.

When going back together install collar, get the ring in the grove, slide washer on and pinch the three pieces together
with two pairs of pliers. Now I've never had a JD starter apart but that method works for Delco starters. Put that end
washer in the way it came apart, lip toward the snap ring.

Damn! I'm almost embarrassed that I had to ask! She's back together and ready to go back in the tractor. Thanks for the quick reply.

Put the starter in this morning and adjusted the linkage trying to keep minimal pressure on the starter switch. Spun right up. 620 hasn't started like that in a couple years. Hopefully the linkage adjustment will help save a few switches. Drilled about 25 acres of rye pulling an IH 150 shoe drill.

Is that a saddle type switch fastened to the starter with two screws? If you need a little adjustment you can drill the
two mounting holes out of the switch and move it a little.
