Have Case 580C model. Boom leaks down immediately upon lever release. (Drops bucket to ground) What's broken? Valve worn out? etc.

Thank you for your response. Not to disagree, but it seems like on my other cylinders that needed repack, they'd leak out the end and make a mess on the ground. Not so this time. Thanks again. I learned something else.

As jm. posted most likely boom cylinder internal packings/seal rings. cylinders can leak internally as well as external. Do both boom cylinders completely, pistons and glands.

Recently had this same problem on my little tow-behind backhoe. Pulled the cylinder apart and the internal seals came apart in chunks. No external leakage, just the hydraulic fluid leaking past the internal seals and so to the other side of the piston. Replaced them (and the rest of the seals while I was at it) and it's worked fine since. It certainly COULD be a valve leak--depending on your setup you can sometimes change hoses between valves to see if it still does it--but I'd say an internal cylinder leak is more probable.

You notice I said PISTON packing that is what makes things move, all internal and when it goes will do just as you describe.
