Time For a New Starter

Maybe. This 2140 has been a weak starter since I bought it a couple of years ago. Last few starts have needed the battery booster and finally the + cable smoked a
little. Cranking speed is way way down even though the batteries test ok. Bench test of the starter spins but sounds a little rough. I have not opened it up as I
don't think I"d be much wiser. Searching jd parts online is confusing as they have several different numbers for what appears to be the same starter. Tractor
serial 398899 should make it one of the early 2140s (European version) if I'm reading it right. Hopefully the jd parts desk guys will be able to help. Some video
of it here.

A smoking cable is likely the actual problem. All cables that carry starting current should be 1-Oga fine stranded copper, with soldered copper connections shring tube waterproofed. Try that first! Jim

I'm pretty sure you have it narrowed down to two possible causes. The cable or the starter.

Could you try a proven good cable before ordering a starter?

You need to do a load test on the batteries. Get a cheap one at Harbor Freight, Just cause it reads 12 volts doesn't mean a lot if it drops way down under a load.

I've considered that possibility too. Cables look good far as I can see. This is not an original starter as it has a rebuild sticker on it. Plus I question the location of the two ground straps. Neither one attaches to cast iron on the engine or transmission. Just sheet metal.

You found the trouble when the ground cables do not bolt onto the starter mounting bolt .
When replacing the starter . Spec The higher power starter for 359 or 414 six cylinder . They bolt on and will improve cold weather starting .

Evening: I don't know your machine at all, just want to mention.. ADF Diesel...
They have a web site, maybe they have a gear reduction starter that will fit?
I found them right on for Belarus, and MF machines, priced better also.
A possible contact is a guy named...Charms....
hope it helps

I've heard of the reduction drive starters. In fact my brother just installed one for a customer on a 2090 Case. Expensive though.

There are a couple sellers on ebay selling a gear reduction starter for your tractor for under $100.I have a couple of very similar starters on my Olivers now for awhile and they have worked fine.

Less than $100? I will have to check that out. I think the shipping charges would be more than that on a heavy item like a starter. Recently had a carburetor mailed from the U.S. and it was nearly $70 postage fees

Anything except UPS from the US to Canada . On a $100 item the typical brokerage fees etc are $60.
Before your jump all over that $100 starter . If it is only 2.9Kw , keep looking for more power .
Deere had a 4Kw Delco and 4Kw Bosch option for those Utility
Tractors .

Its free shipping don't know if that includes up to you or not. Those starters look like they wouldn't be very good but the one I put on my Olivers spin the motor faster than original starters do.Aluminum case so weight can't be much.Plus supposedly draws less amps.
