ground speeds

I got the 'Speedometer" app on my phone. I 've checked some of my tractors. the results were somewhat surpriseing. The F12 with Hysler overdrive/roadgear will run a whopping 7 mph. the 8N ford,14. the Super M will run 17 and
the 706 will hit 20 mph. The 826 Hydro 15/16..The big surprise was the WD9. It hit 20 consistent,21 once down a slight grade.wow!!! That's 'haulin' @$$'.Acctually kind of scary.

maybe the engine is speeded up. they were rated for around 16 mph like most of the other models. the supers have very slightly higher gearing. but they do clip along.

I have an old MH 101JR that won't throw mud off the back wheels in fourth, high gear. Some early models will hit sixteen easily. I think mine might be slow as it might have had steel wheels at one time. Later 30 and 44 models had five speeds.
For grins and giggles here's some pics of the latest tractor drive toy, has 4,300 miles so far this year. Not sure yet was top speed is, but in SOS tenth gear 1500 RPM it runs about 40 MPH..

I have been thinking about using tricycle tractors for tractor drives and high speeds. Last year I was moving on the road from one job to another. Just as I left the roadway turning into a drive I had a spindle break on a 1958 tractor. The frontend looked great and I have owned this tractor since the late eighties. I have use the tractor but nothing that put udo stress on the front end. I have no clue what it was used for before I got it. I had just been on an overpass the the expansion joints were big enough to let that broken front end catch in. Hopefully a tricycle would only lose one wheel and the other would keep the tractor up. It was Swartz front end. But they all can fail.

The Ford early 4000 SOS has a 3.6 planetary reduction output, the 6000 SOS does not use it. I bolted 4000 rear axle to the 6000 SOS transmission, which speeds up the 4000
axle 3.6 times faster than stock. Had to have a special coupler welded up for it to work. Smaller 11.2 X 24 radials are on to slow it down a bit. In ninth gear 15 MPH engine is turning about 900 RPM, it has gotten 25 MPG a
couple times on drives this summer in that gear..

Having been doing tractor drives for eighteen years, I would not use a narrow front as on rough roads it will hit a lot more bumps. Here's my list a tractor should have for safety, comfort, and convenience. Diesel engine, not so much for economy, but mainly for down hill engine braking and reliability. Gas engines don't engine brake downhill well as diesels do. A six cylinder engine, as they run smoother. Mechanical Power assist steering, so tractor can be safely steered while it's being towed if needed. Hydrostatic steering does not always steer well when being towed. Wide front end, so less bumps are hit when on rough roads. Mechanical non power brakes, as some tractors with power brakes may not work safely with engine not running. Air ride seat, makes longer drives much more comfortable. Overhead sun protection, buggy top or roll bar canopy, as I'm not a sun worshipper either. Back up camera, liked it so well on the pickup so the last two drive tractors got it too. A good working GPS, a bike speedometer calibrated to one wheel, to keep track of speed and distance when the GPS loses it's signal in heavy wooded areas. And don't forget the snack tray and cup holders too!

Dieseltech, surely you are pulling our legs here!

If all the tractors had to meet that criteria, it would certainly
be a pretty boring parade to watch. LOL

Nope, not pulling any legs sir! My tractor drive friends from Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin will tell you the Redneck Ratrod has all that
list. Of course I do suffer from a disease I call Tinkeritous. Just wish the Mackinac Bridge crossing was not cancelled this year, was really looking forward to the round
trip my Wisconsin friends had planned. Hopefully next year..
