Feed store hay

Went by the feed store this morning.
This use to be quality country feed store in the past.
You could get bulk feed mixed to your liking and delivered to your farm.
Now you would be lucky to find a cow ear tag there.
Mostly dog; horse; chicken stuff now.

They had Halloween decoration hay for sale.
IE; Not feed quality.
Mature Johnson grass stalks so big it looked like small sticks.
Even seen some briar patch in some bales.
They wanted $6.50 for a small square bale.

I was afraid to ask how much some good quality alfalfa hay was considering it is trucked in from over 600 miles away.

Well i got STICKER shock once . I hauled a BIG load of Alfalfa in small squares one time from South Dakota to Miami Fl. Loaded it just ahead of a Blizzard and got caught up in it just as i got into Iowa . Took a week to get it to Fl. They were selling it at the FEED store on the far west side for 35 bucks a bale.

Try selling single bales to the public for 6.50$ a bale. I refuse to do it now even for 10$ a bale, not worth the hassle and loss of your time.

Farmers can sell a 4x4 bale of any quality hay here for $50.00. It will take $100.00 to buy good hay. Buying hay by the bale is a mugs game. Hay should be bought and sold by the pound only. Different balers make different weight bales, much to do with how the baler is adjusted. And grass hay will wrap into a heavier bale than dry alfalfa ever can.

one here the local coop has a elevator store,, you can still buy prepackaged feed, fencing supplys ect at,, but they dropped buying grain or cleaning it, only place within 150 miles to have grain cleaned also,, they have a C store and a main store,, the main store sells candles, clothing boots ect,, I have not bought a thing there in over 20 years now,, I still do some biz at the elevator,, like buying millet and wire clips for fencing,, I used to spend 30K plus a year there, my dsl fuel comes from a fuel supplier a few miles away, they beat coops fuel prices by 50 cents a gallon or more and do not charge me a 45.00 delivery fee either,, ours here has not lost my biz due to them offering less items it is 100% due to their prices on things,, I do sell them their straw bales they sell, this year i raised my prices and made them come and pick them up from the field,, they are now paying 5.00 a bale for straw no clue what they sell them for though I have heard 9.00 but cant say for sure
cnt

(quoted from post at 09:15:05 10/22/20) Don't blame the stores for what they sell, they have to sell what customers want to buy to stay in business.

NO! NO! NO! They have to sell what *I* want and ONLY what *I* want or else they're no good. After all, I'm their only customer.

Sarcasm mode disengaged.

That sounds great from a theoretical standpoint......Enter Reality: No weight stations within 25 miles at least. No equipment to get it there. Nobody uses weight, or nutrient testing, nor this nor that. It's a seat of the pants market here and must be working as lots of folks in the business.....self included, but I only sell to folks on my road and they see what they get while it's growing with guaranteed satisfaction or it's free!
