Finishing steers

How do you guys finish your steers? I only raise up 5 or 6. I grass feed up until the last two months and then I feed 2/3 of a
5 gallon bucket per day per steer roughly. Been getting good results.

The recommended is a minimum of 90 days at 2% their body weight on grain. Most prefer a high percentage of corn because it results in better marbling. I've heard good things about finishing on barley also, but have never tried it.
When I bring one in to start finishing, I start slow and work them up to 2% weight over a couple weeks. I end up feeding around 25 lbs of feed per head, per day. That's at least one full bucket, sometimes a bucket and a half. It depends on the feed. I keep that up for at least 90 days. My checking account is always relieved when butcher day comes, it sure gets expensive.

I grind some oats, corn and nice alfalfa hay with salt and mineral and feed all they will eat. Worked good on the last batch. I do feed some corn all along, but at 1,000 pounds I start kicking it up to as much as they will take over a month or so. They also get free choice hay. Right now mine are taking 3 Paul's a day on four steers

Forgot to included, I typically feed the local co-ops finishing ration, but sometimes also include about 10 lbs of cracked corn to the side. Some of them just seem to eat cracked a little better than whole corn.
Also always give them a half a bale of hay to keep the gut going.

Grass fed 18 to 20 months old 650 to 700 hanging weight. Just a little sweet feed now and then. Plenty fat enough without pinning up and feeding grain.

Chopped hay with chopped barley mixed in.. beet pulp shreds if i can get em.. Ive fattened herfords, angus, holsteins, and all sorts of cross's doing this. We have an old monkey ward feed mill and a homemade mixer..
