Closing a Cold Shut Link

I was taught to use 3 steps in a vise.

1 Put the eye against the face of the jaw and close it till it is all the way in.

2 Pull the eye out and close until about 1/8 inch of the tail is out of the eye.

3 peen the tail back over the eye.

Was taught by a Blacksmith. Good Luck.

I always closed them with vide grips two or three adjustments on the screw, turning it a little tighter each time, until the tail is through the eye. Then I would rivet the part of the tail sticking through the eye. You don’t always have the convenience of having a bench and a vide to work with. A tractor draw bar works good to rivet against like you would an anvil

You can just pound a lap link shut with a hammer. A solid surface like an anvil under it helps a lot. Is this being used in a working chain? If so the lap link will have a very small working load limit even compared to a low grade chain. If you need more strength you might consider a clevis link or a Hammerlok link.

In theory you can just pound the lap link shut and go. In practice that never works very good. I usually put it in a vise and weld it shut. It's still the weak link in a chain no matter what.
