Just bought a JD 855 'project' tractor 4WD with a loader and deck, has about 1300 hrs on it.Has sat for a couple years because it stopped reversing,it'll go forward no problem but won't back up.Any ideas on what may be the problem or where to start looking?

Don't think its the linkage.Does it have a valve or what to activate the forward and reverse? Forward works, haven't hauled it home yet to really closely examine it.

TF, I have a PDF of the technical manual for the 855, message me your email and it's on the way

We have one that did the opposite, it would go in reverse but not forward. We had to split it because the input shaft gear retainer bolt had broken letting the gear pull into the other gear to engage then back off when we tried to go forward.

Looks like the two pedals, forward and reverse both actuate a lever down behind your right heal, going into transmission.
Each pedal has a tierod with swivel rod ends so one pedal pushes and other pedal pulls on that lever.
Maybe you will get lucky and the linkage for reverse is disconnected or broke.

Thanks for the offer I got a technical manual with the tractor. The story is the lady's father bought the tractor new and when it had problems he parked it then she inherited it so who knows.it needs some other work like hydraulic lines on the loader replaced and such, starts and run good loader is good shape no welds or breaks.I gave $2200 for it,probably enough but might get lucky, those sell around here for some pretty good money.
