Fall plowing and ground bees

Decided to fall plow about 3 acres of sod. I was using my Farmall M so no cab. I was almost done when I looked down and had plowed through a nest of ground bees the previous trip. The plow covered up most of
them and a few chased me down the field but managed to not get stung. There weren't many around when I made the next round so I got past the problem. Fall plowing works good here as it helps break up the clay
and sod over the winter but it can be hazardous business.

My brother was clearing land last week and found a ground nest after the 4th or 5th time of driving over the nest. He got stung once and got the heck out.

Good evening: This reminds me of an occasion about 35 years ago; I was using push mower in back yard, I dislodged a small pile of old boards, bees came out of ground.

I discovered I could take off my shoes and socks while running across the yard.

Got several stings, not serious, no reaction. I don't leave a pile of old boards around anymore!

My dad told me once about an uncle of his, (my great uncle), back in the day was plowing with a team of horses and a walking plow when he plowed though a nest of yellow jackets.

He was stung so bad he spent several days in bed.

I found a yellow jacket nest about 3 weeks ago while weedeating along a seawall. About a dozen stings before I finally out ran them. When I stopped there were about 10 balled up on my clothes and shoes trying to get me. Thats a mean little critter, any way you look at it.

We used to have a nest of bumble bees in the twine pile beside the hay stack. Every morning when I fed hay I would hear the pile buzz when I threw a little more twine on the pile. I very seldom see bumble bees anymore. I dont know where they went but I dont miss them.

Every year for the last four years I have encountered an underground nest where the wasps are moving from their summer to winter quarters. Each of them has been near to where I walk frequently so I got my shop vac and sucked them up as they came and went.
