Last day of harvest

Got tired of waiting on the wheat to dry up so started in on the weekend with it testing 17% moisture. Cool though so it should be ok in the bin. It improved to 15.6% by the time we finished yesterday. A good long day of mostly non stop combining for me thanks to my "crew" that kept the truck rolling and moving the auger to the next bins as necessary. I didn't waste much time shooting video but wore the Gopro and pushed the start button once in a while. It gives a good idea of what a day in the fields is like here for me.

Harvesting Wheat

I think it depends on the location and climate a lot. Here wheat will stay pretty much the same if stored though in the field during cutting I have seen it drop and be higher some in the morning when we start. On the Plains it will drop a couple or more percent in an afternoon.

(quoted from post at 07:52:07 10/05/20) Is wheat like soybeans where moisture will go up and down daily?
The morning dew might raise the moisture level a bit as will the cool of the evening. But not usually enough to be a problem. Straw toughens up more than the grain and it can be a problem on the axial flow. Saturday evening, soon as the sun went down I could see it on the engine tach speed and hear/feel the rotor rumble in the heavy spots. I decided to shut down before breaking something. Yesterday I worked til 9:00 and the straw was going through just fine. Different humidity levels I guess.

Dew is an interesting thing, Here doing hay we find what direction the breeze is blowing from will influence the relative humidity and the dew. This also affects how things dry. I often look at the latest numbers from the nearest weather station and they certainly tell the story. The axial flows really
don't like much green or damp stuff and soon tell you when it is time to stop.
