Corn dryer is set up

Lotta work got done in the Kingdom this weekend. Started by picking up the grain dryer yesterday. That took til after two in the afternoon. I went and raked that hay I cut a couple weeks ago. It's been rained on every day til yesterday and there is not much left. I have to get it off the field tho, so I'll bale it this week. Wasn't quite dry yet today. I was a bit surprised to see some green in it yet. Not thinking there will be much value, but hope I can get enough for bedding or mulch to pay the baling.

Today I set up the dryer. Had to put the auger up on top because it was off to make it short enough to pull down the road. Also had to put it back to pto operation because the other guy had put an electric motor on to run the fan. Not sure how that worked since he didn't run the recirculating with it. Anyway, a couple belts and adjustments and some grease and it seems to run fine. Here it is all leveled and ready.




The DC looks right at home there and I've dried a lot of corn with that tractor on a dryer similar. I may run it on there for old times sake this year. Only going to have 10 batches or so to run.

After that I ground a batch of feed with the 830 and grinder/mixer.




That's the last of the corn so it's good I'm about ready to get some more. The corn was at 27% a couple weeks ago and the weather is supposed to be good this week, so I'll probably start on corn next weekend. I'm sure the 1160 combine is getting itchy to get going. Lol.

That's a nice looking setup. Is that a New Holland grain dryer? Also curious if Case made their own grinder mixers.

It's a Toxowik dryer by GT. The mixer was mad by Helix for case.

Neat! I was just looking at a GT dryer on Tractorhouse. Unfortunately, it had the usual Tractorhouse pricing to go with it. Is that the same Helix that made auger wagons? The name sounds familiar.

Those are pretty good dryers. I had a 500 bushel continuous flow that I used for years, my dad had a M&W continuous before that. Sure saved a lot of waiting at the elevator.

Yes it is. They made chopper boxes for Case too. I would really love to find one of those. I would go anywhere in the 48 states for either a hay conditioner or chopper from Case. I believe case made the hay conditioner.

I would not get in a hurry too take out 27% corn, that is a long way to dry down.

With a drought much of the year here in the central Fingerlakes, corn is coming out of the field at an unheard of 17% today!

I will keep my eyes peeled for both.

The guy that sold me the dryer has a couple I can get if I take them down. Might go get them this winter. We shall see

Don't know anything about corn, how does it dry the corn? How long does it take?

There is another screen cone inside the shell you see. The corn fills the space between the screens and is about 18" thick there. The fan you see in the square box is run from the tractor and there is a big burner in there. The fan pushes the hot air through the corn heating it and sweating the water out. You bring the corn up to a temp that sweats enough water out then the burner turns off and the fan cools it back down. The upright auger in these draws the corn up from the bottom and drops it on top continuously circulating it and mixing it so the moisture gets even. The upper part is a holding area where the hot corn sits and sweats for a while so the water releases quicker making these pretty efficient. A batch takes about 4 hours at 25% going down to 14 1/2% which is where most dry to for storage. 15% is what the elevators want to buy at, but around here we can have storage issues at that moisture unless the bins have good ventilation. For nonvented bins we need to be down to 13.5% or so.

What shape is the center auger in ? They wear to a razor edge and
lose efficiency which will wear out the tube. Making a line so you
can grease bearing on bottom without getting under dryer when it's
running is a good idea. That way you don't get covered in bee's wings
servicing bearing.

that unit takes me back in younger days, worked but was really slow, now have all in bin dryers with circuflow systems but the last few years they have become mor e4less out dated, hard to keep up with 12 and 16 row cornheads now days. i solved the issue this year i rented crop ground all out and rest of farm is in govt program.

Pretty neat and done by tractor power.

Got a Case 222 hay conditioner here but nfs.
