Long 445 Clutch Replacement

I know of the Long 445 that we can no longer put in gear while it is running. The owner thinks the clutch is out because he adjusted it as much as he could. Is there anything to check before we split it? Could something else be wrong? Can we put it in gear and try to start it? Does it have a neutral lockout that needs to be defeated?

I thought when a clutch is out, it would
no longer pull when transmission is in
gear.
This sounds like clutch is stuck or
adjusted the wrong way?

The damper springs in the clutch disc can fall out of the disc and become lodged between the disc and flywheel. This will cause the clutch not to disengage. And also the disc can disintegrate, due to abuse, and become lodged between pressure plate and the flywheel. And of course the pilot bearing can seize and cause the transmission to keep turning. Mark.

If the freeplay in the pedal is adjusted properly, and it still doesn't fullly disengage, something is wrong and it will have to come apart.

As said, it can be the disc coming apart, the pilot bearing, or most likely something has gone wrong in the pressure plate.

Best to replace everything while you are in there. Be sure to get an alignment tool, tighten the pressure plate bolts evenly so not to warp the plate. If the flywheel is heat checked or blue spots, it will need to be resurfaced. When stabbing the engine back in it must not hang the weight on the trans shaft, nor use bolts to force the shaft into the spline. Everything has to fit back and bolt up without excessive force.

The engine clutch disc doesn't go against the flywheel,it encased in the clutch pack and the PTO clutch goes against the flywheel.Sounds like the disc is stuck,
I'd get another tractor and hook to it hold the clutch pedal down while the other tractor rocked the 445.
