Farmall 460 with H axle

so I posted awhile back asking about my fasthitch and drawbar on my farmall 460. I dont know if anyone remembers if not thats totally fine, I got that all sorted out. Then I had to replace a rear axle seal, well no big deal it happens but in doing so I found out it has the smaller axle in it which is contrary to what I was told when I bought it (guess I should have measured) its my understanding that this is the same size axle as whats in the Farmall H? And is this going to give me trouble with a round baler? or 8 roundbale trailer? Or like a manure speaker? Or will I be fine and dandy doing what I need to despite the smaller axle?
Thanks,
-Garrett

Early production 460's came with the 2 and 1/2 inch axles . I once owned 460 s/n 571 and it had the 2 1/2 axles . The only time there was a problem was when you mounted one of them old HEAVY I H mounted corn pickers , then you broke axles on every wash out, ground hog hole or other big bump in the field . They started putting in the 2 and 3/4 axles later on in production . Guys that ran the New Idea mounted pickers did not have a problem because that picker was lighter with the 8 roll bed the 12 roll was a bit heavier but still way lighter then the 2 ME and 2 MH . I do not believe you will have a problem with the baler or manure spreader UNLESS that spreader is a monster but a NORMAl 125 thru 175 bushel will be fine.

People tend to forget that a 460 is an H with all the updated "bells & whistles" that were available in that era. It was powered by one of IH truck division's smaller 6 cylinder engines. It was designed to replace the upgraded H (SH, 300) that was known as a 350.

Should be fine. we have an old tandem axle manure spreader we pull with our H or MD occasionally in the summer loaded the only problem is the front end gets light. You can feel every gravel stone in the drive as the wheels go over them.

I agree, we ran our super H with a 2-MH picker with no issues. Even 80Bu/acre corn would keep it in second gear. The real issue is the wheels needed to be set out and dished out. Whit the bending moment placed on the axle where it exited the housing. With modest utility wheel spacing it will hold all loads+ some. Jim

Ah yep , I as a young pup THOUGHT that it would replace my 450 D ah yea NO . It did not take long to learn to despise the 460 and after the right inner axle bearing went out and filling the whole trans mission and rear end with filings that got past the early style hyd filter and into the hyd system and the ongoing problems after i was never so glad to see a tractor go down the road and wanted gone so bad that we loaded it and hauled it to it's new home two days after the big Blizzard of 77 while most roads were still closed and got it to within five miles of it's new home and the guy drove it the rest of the way off road thru fields and places the snow was not so deep. . I have one old customer that still has his dad's 460 that was bought new here from a deal that is now closed back in 59 and i still do work on it . That dealer ship closed just after the I H Case merger and i have been working on it since 83 . I have done valve jobs on it every year till i got him to switch engine oil i have done several rear axles out in the field while under the picker one clutch and T/A as it has had two . That tractor up till a couple years ago ran everyday twice a day hauling manure . It is now in semi retirement running a 8 foot brush hog and pulling wagons .
