does any one keep a flock of chickens ?
we have a small flock of buff orphingtons,
what kind of laying hens do you like?

I do not have chickens because the cost of feeding them would be greater than the price of eggs at the grocery store. If I turned them out to forage for themselves, the coyotes or fox would get them, or the hawks and eagles.

I have a mix some blacksex links they are egg laying machines when the weather is nice. Americaunas lay eggs all the time, Dominique small frame good egg layers and foragers.

That's true, but there is NO comparison between fresh eggs and those pale, watery things you get from the store.

Mixed flock here, black sexlink, red sexlink, Golden Comet, Barred Rock and a couple of Americanas. Only have 14 birds at the moment, we usually get a half-dozen year old hens from a neighbor every fall. She starts a new flock every year to maximize production.

I say ah I say ah boy thats no chicken thats a dog boy...foghorn leghorn. Always enjoyed the chicken cartoons....gobble

We have 6 worn out chickens of different breeds. I figure a dozen eggs cost around 6-8 dollars. Time to drop 22.00 for another 50 ponds of chicken feed.
On the subject of chickens. The hens were making a racket last night. I found an opossum in the hen house. I left it there, it was only 1/2 grown. All the hens were still there in the morning. They must not be meat eaters. Any thoughts? Stan

You got lucky that you have any chicken at all since you had a opossum in the hen house. They eat the heads off of chickens. Don't know where you get your feed but I pay $9.99 for 50lbs of feed

I have no idea how many chickens I have. I have Buff,s and bared rocks and Blacksex link and a few other breeds of chickens and I have had chicken for 20 plus years now

Foghorn Leghorn is my hero. I used to work with people like that,
lecture you half to death about the silliest little things, why
some days I some days I couldn't get a word in edgewise for the
whole day.

Have probably 30, mix of Rhode Island reds, legions, easter egg layers and bantoms. Have guineas running loose too. Other birds are peafowl, turkeys and ducks.. O ya my daughter has parakeets too.

Everything is more expensive on the west coast, since all the feed is trucked in from the east. I don't think California grows a lot of corn, it does grow it's share of rice. Stan

Currently We have about 50 birds made up of buff Orpington , blacksex links , whitesex links , isa browns , welsummers , barred rock , Rhode Island reds and a wheaten maran rooster.

Buff Orphingtons make nice pets. The ones we have aren't very good layers. Also have lavender orphingtons, they are wild and lay small eggs. Also have Black Australorps and Isa Browns. The Isa Browns are young enough that they should still be laying, but aren't. The best layer is still the white leghorn. She is older then most of the other chickens.

I grew up with leghorns.. and learned to hate chickens.... there is a reason they are called fowl..

But here about a month ago my son asked why there was a chicken coop at the farm but no chickens? so after scrounging I found him 6 pullets they are rhode island red and isa brown. He is averaging 5 eggs a day..

I keep around 30 red sexlinks, always replace them in October and sell last years hens for more than the price of the new pullets. Advertise on Craigslist, people only want 2 or 3 hens and will pay more, usually sell out on the first weekend.

From my earliest memories mom raised Brown Leghorn chickens for eggs and meat until we built commercial broiler houses in mid 2000, now no farm chickens are allowed on the farm, we have a friend with a small flock that we get fresh eggs from.

I have Buffs as well. Great hens. I have had them when the kids were home. Another good one is Sapphire Gems! Great layers and great friendly hens.Beautiful too. :D
