Parasite killer for dogs

Having the dosage correct is key. I have Jack Russell Terriers. A lady I know was letting her dog eat the horse paste wormer and her dog got Ivermectin toxicity and lost vision. It did clear up, but this is different than the genetic mutation that some herding breeds have.

We have a Beagle/Hound Dog mix that weighs about 35 pounds. We use Heartgard Plus that does contain Ivermectin but the dosage is specifically for 25 to 50 pound dogs. We've used this on him for about 5 or 6 years without any apparent adverse effects.

We also have a Boston Terrier puppy that weighs about 7 pounds at this time. Our previous Boston was an adult that weighed 19 pounds. Again, we use Heartgard Plus but a dosage that is specifically for puppies less than 10 pounds.

I'm really interested to hear about adverse effects from the Ivermectin. Before I administer any more, I'll specifically address this potential bad effect with our Veterinarian before giving another dose. Thanks for the heads-up.

Certain herding breeds can have a genetic mutation that causes them to have major neurological problems if given ivermectic. It's not something among all dog breeds, and really only a small percentage of herding dogs have the problem. But there's no way to know without testing. Your dogs don't fall in the "herding dog" status so should be no issue.

We've had the privilege of another good dog, actually our neighbors dog who adopted us. She came over years ago now and has had two litters of pups. She's chocolate lab. Last year or more it became apparent that she was suffering from skin disease, scabies quite likely which with cats and cattle I'm thinking is an eventuality. We have been adding an ounce of apple cider vinegar and some coconut oil to her bowl every morning and slowly but surely it has made quite the difference.
