Does anyone have a trick
to remove the plugs
without breaking em?..they
have been replaced before
by a Ford garage..100,000
miles ago

3/8 impact. That’s what I did on my 6.8. The first one I tried by hand felt odd when I tried to turn it. Used the impact, they all came out with no issues.

Honestly for how my plugs looked with 110000 on them, I don’t expect to ever change them again.

yes i do,... dont buy a ford as that is one of the problems they have.it is not only your truck. and if you want more problems buy the diesel, then they will remove the cab to work on it.

Back in 2012 when I left automotive Champion was offering a one piece plug as suggested above. I tried most all the tricks of the time. Seems I had one all come out of a Lincoln 4.6. The theory behind using an impact is sound, just hasn't worked for me. The end of the plug is secured to the threaded part by a pressed crimp. Carbon from the combustion chamber seizes the crimped end trapping it in the head. The tool I liked using for the plug removal cost $60 something dollars and made by Lisle. There maybe different tools and spark plugs available today.

(quoted from post at 18:55:28 09/17/20) There is a special tool for removing them. Most auto parts stores like O'Reilly and Autozone will rent them

The special tool is for after they break. But they're not a big deal to remove after you've done a couple. They tried reinventing the wheel. It's just a poorly designed spark plug. The special tool mentioned works very well

First of all, engine needs to be room temperature. Then start by tightening each plug just a bit. Then loosen and hope for the best. When they had the original plugs, I would loosen by an 1/8 turn, then fill the plug wells with carbon cleaner, let it sit overnight, and pull the plugs in the morning. Now that they are all on their second or third set, I haven't done the overnight soak. Save yourself having to do the job again, don't buy the Champion one piece plugs, they don't last long. Most of the Triton 5.4 I deal with having a misfire of late, have Champion plugs in them. Plus, those Champion plugs are expensive. Use Motorcraft.

There is a U-tube video of a guy changing plugs and all he used was an air impact and hammered them all out.

You tube has lots of videos on tricks people use. Most are get it hot then spray penetrating oil around the spark plug to soak into the head. Or do what I did and took it to an independent mechanic and have him do it. Cost me a $100 but plugs are changed and I didn't have to find the tool to extract them. Replaced with one piece plugs so I can replace them next time with out worrying about breaking them.

What Sprint 6 said.

I went back to taking my time even if it takes a day to get them out... After you snap off 4 are 5 you learn the feel to get them out without breaking them. Those guys on commission can deal with a impact and retrieving the broken ones I will stay with my estimate of you pay me for the time it takes to remove them even if it takes a day are take it somewhere else : )... There is always going to be that one that eats your lunch I am not taking the fall it belongs to you you brought it. If I owned one it would get a new set every 30K I work on a few that's what we do we have never had a problem getting them out the old fashioned way.
