This might have been a mistake...farmall 460

When I bought my Farmall 460 this spring I
took the drawbar off and put a fast hitch
on and converted it to a 3 point. Well I
broke a pretty major bolt that holds the
arms up kinda (I'll post a pic later.) So
I broke this bolt while brush mowing, and
I replaced it but my fear is that this
bolt will either come loose or break if
put a 180 bushel manure spreader or round
baler on the 3point drawbar. The problem
is this is my only tractor at the moment,
and I have access to a 180 bushel
spreader. What are your guys thoughts on
it??

You are not required to completely fill the manure spreader or the round baler. Fifty HP sounds pretty small and light to run a big round baler.

Use the tractors drawbar, you should not be towing stuff with a 3pt drawbar,it is dangerous because when you go downhill with a heavy trailer, the hitch will lift up,taking weight off the rear wheels, which can cause the tractor to free wheel downhill with no brakes. Not being a nay sayer, just don't want that to happen.

I'm wondering if you have the manual that shows you how to properly lock out the drawbar? I have one for a 560, but I don't know how much difference there is between the two tractors. Would almost think they are the same. Either or, that bolt you broke could have been worn down & ready to go out already. Rotary mowers I don't know much about, except the fact that I've never owned one. My 130 bu spreader has been on my 560 w/FH & had no issue. Moved a lot of sopping wet manure. The drawbar was locked out, though.

The actual IH draw bar for the FastHitch system should handle anything a 460 could drag off. If you fill that spreader I wouldn't worry about the drawbar I would worry about the tractor.

Pin the hitch so it does not go upward (under cylinder, down pressure control pin) use grade 8 bolts and a smidgin of locktite to reduce unscrewing. Do not use lock washers. Tighten hitch pivot points by drilling next standard size and repinning. Use grease, or #1 corn head lube to keep the pivots from wearing. Do not fill the spreader. Jim

For tongue heavy loads you're supposed to use the fast hitch"holey" draw bar in the hitch with the swinging draw bar in place along with it

The neighbor used use a 400 with fast hitch on a similar sized spreader. He had to tackle a couple of sizable hills and I don't recall a bent or broken fast hitch drawbar. He filled that spreader each time to the top until the manure ran over the sides. 4X4 small round baler should not be hard on that tractor. Start talking 5X6 or something similar that would most likely be too much for that tractor.

Use like this with the regular drawbar if you have it. Extending back with 3 point arms and a drawbar would put more pressure on the hitch. With arms placed like the picture it won't go up or down even with the down pressure pin left out of the hole. For more support of drawbare, raise the lift arms up a good ways and hook chain to drawbar 2 places circle over lift arms and raise arms enough to have some tension on chain.

Would like to see what conversion you used, and what bolt broke.

Would be worth a picture?

We've got a bigger spreader than that we have used our H and MD on with it full and running off the sides. The only problem was power to run the spreader and pull it with the H the MD was fine though both were a bit light on the front end. Do tend to put the bigger tractors on if it is a bit wet or want to move better.

I'm surprised at some people's infatuation with 3 pt hitch attachments. Dad had a 450 Farmall with Fast Hitch. He bought the tractor used in '65 with a 4F-43 4-14 fully mounted plow, and an IH#25 5 ft rotary chopper, that chopper was built like a battleship! And a year later bought a Service 6 ft Fast Hitch rear blade. Everything else we did with it stuff got hooked to the FH drawbar. December of '68 Dad got a 4010 Deere, with 3-point. The ONLY thing we used it for was to install the lift bar between the rear rock shaft and left gang of the frt mounted cultivator. Dad even took the lift links and lower links OFF the tractor since they were never going to be used. Everything we did with the tractor used pull type equipment.

More than likely the OP's 460 has the HD rear axles, 2-3/4" same as M,SM,400,450,560,656,666,686. The 2-1/2" axles were standard, same size as H, SH, 300, 350. Yep, load the spreader a bit lighter in the front but you can pile it on towards the rear. We had a Deere #R ground driven spreader, I've seen it rated 135 cubic feet, and 140 bushel, I thought it was small. Not sure what Deere considered a load, but we piled EVERYTHING possible in it, heaped up to the max, and pulled it with a FARMALL H.
