Deere 1520 hard starter

I have a Deere 1520 gas that was completly overhauled. Head done by a good machine shop, carb sent away to a pro,new sleeves and pistons ect. I retorqued the head bolts and readjusted the valves. It runs great both at idle and under load. You have to crank it a long time before it starts. Is there a check valve in the fuel pump? Where do you start on this? New cap, rotor and wires. Have a nice spark at the points but did not replace them. Any ideas? Thanks Tom

Is there a solenoid on the back/rear of the carburetor? This will sound strange, but try giving it 1/2 choke as you crank it and shove the choke in once it runs. Dad had a 2020 gas that, from the day it was new, needed some choke to start with a hot engine on a 90 degree day. It would run like a top once you got it started.

Those mechanical fuel pumps do have check valves built into them. You could hook up a gravity fed tank and try that ? to see if that is the problem.

Mike has a good idea, and we used to use an outboard gas tank to troubleshoot fuel systems. The squeeze bulb is good for filling the system, and you can put it on top of the tractor (with some padding) to gravity feed the carburetor.
