Split Rail Fence

I'm thinking of installing some split rail fence around my pond, but not sure if there are better options for aesthetics, like natural borders, etc....What do you guys think would look good to border a pond?

The up keep on the BLACK board horse fence is a lot more than a split rail cedar. I have some that is going on 20 years old and nothing but put back a rail where maybe a deer knocked it out or something like that. One thing to do when you settle on what or where you are going to put up get you about two sections (maybe 6 rails) extra. The folks that make that stuff change and you might not be able to match the earlier.

hogtite field fence, keeps the livestock and the grand kids out of the pond. At least it will slow down the grandkids. Use every other post wood and paint white, looks good to me. gobble

Vic,

Are you located in an area that might have building/zoning/aesthetic/HOA codes associated with the fence? I live in a rural area of Middle Tennessee but, as more and more development takes place in the area, lots of new restrictions are being adopted.

are we discussing a post and rail fence where the rails are split or are we talking an older style spilt rain that stacked rails? The later are locally called worm, snake, or running fence in Virginia area.

If you are considering the stacked version, then I can tell you from experience that they can be a whole, big pile of weed eating.

I built this across the front of my dam years ago to keep anyone from driving into the pond or sliding down the front while fishing.
These are black locust posts about 6 inches in diameter put deep in the dam and round black locust poles about 8 feet long between then.
All were cut within site of the pond.
I drilled through the posts and put 1/2 inch rebar 18 inches long through the posts and drilled the ends of the rails to slide on the rebar.
Had to start at one side and put it up as I went across the dam.
Very strong.
And it will be standing long after I am dead.

If you look close, you can see one of Bruce's geese swimming in the pond.

Plant Christmas trees and sell them off selectively.

Are you wanting to hide the pond from view on one side or all around?
Prevent people from trespass ing and fishing the pond?
Keeping kids out of pond?I

We had a red cedar post and rail fence at the family farm down in Coloma, Mi 100 miles south of you I think.
Out of 100 posts and rails, I bet we did not replace more than six due to rot in 30 years. Posts were set in west michigan tan sand only.

Actually Coloma is very close to me. Pine trees I thought about, just something for aesthetics, privacy and
security.
