Gonna get hip replacement

Finally had an appointment with my surgeon yesterday. We did the pre-register for surgery and had a lengthy talk with the surgeon. He is going to go in through ther front, says it allows quicker down time. He tells me that I will spend at least the night in the hospital and will be up walking as soon as the numbness works off. No feeding livestock or getting around the shop till wound heals up and no tractor till at least 2 and probably 3 weeks/ he says my hip will let me know after that when I can push the clutch (he doesn't know about the WD Ally with the hand clutch). He's a young guy but I like him, he talks so everyone can get a grasp of what he's saying and don't seem to care how long he's with you and will answer all questions you have. Now we have to get the exam from my VA nurse Practitioner and she has me scheduled for sep't 23, I was scheduled for October 30th to see her but she bumped me up so I can get it done. I'll have to get the nnalert swab and EKG and Lab work a few days before surgery. So maybe I'll be able to walk without pain in the left side before too long. Now all I have to do is get the 2nd cutting of hay done before surgery. Hay isn't nearly ready but gonna cut it anyway, it;ll beat a snowball as Dad used to say.

The wife got a new left hip last Feb. Now she says "what was I thinking waiting all those years to have it done?" He went in from the front, not side, no more pain(other than 2-3 weeks muscle trauma)and just one night in the hospital. I need a new left hip too, just not during a pandemic.

Good luck, Keith. Let us know how it goes for you. I just had a revision to my right side on 6-8 because it loosened. The left needs it, too. Old joints were metal on metal and the cobalt ions in my blood were off the chart. I'm having a rough time recovering but that's mostly due to lower back issues.

Good luck & get well soon. I had my right knee done the 27th of last month. Take the pills, sit back relax a few days. I'm beginning to walk a little without walker or cane. I have the cane in my hand just in case tho.

Good luck Keith. My wife had both hips done a year apart. Both were done thru the front and she was back to mowing grass in 2 weeks. A lot faster recovery like you said. The second one she didn't stay overnight.

Best wishes from across the pond in mid wales for a speedy recovery.. just don't think you can do the same as what you did when aged 20!! ..,. Doing manual work and chasing after the ladies!!!

Wife had a new hip a few years ago and all went well. Having a good doctor makes all the difference. Hospital where she had it done had a whole wing dedicated to hip and knee replacements. She had to go to a class before the surgery to learn what she needed to have and do and they also discussed what motions, etc were OK after surgery. Before she could leave the hospital she had another secession explaining what she could and couldn't do. She also had to show she could get into a car, lay down on a bed and sit in a chair properly. After the surgery some motions have to be avoided until the hip is healed up. The hospital on the that one morning did 30 hips and 25 knees.

I had a new left hip May 29, result of a fracture after a fall. Hip doing fine now, recovery was fairly quick and pain free, one month of PT afterwards. Good luck withyours.

Friend of mine had both done, and they went in from the front. He couldn't brag enough about that method. He said it was way, way better than the old going through the back or side method.

I need both of mine done. Not sure how to handle it. I just had rotator cuff surgery back in Jan. and was pretty well laid up for 6 weeks, then several months of therapy. Just got "released" about 3 weeks ago. That surgery was a big success and I am better than normal over the deal.

Guess I better get in line for the hips.

Glad you did so well, Gene

Good luck with your hip, I had mine done, a world of difference.BUT....I think you have some unrealistic expectations. That two or 3 weeks is more like 4 to 8 weeks. Just remember, this is major work being done, and if you push it to much you will regret it. Flexing your hip to sit on the WD will most likely cause you to be right back at the hospital. But, you might have a different experience.

I was just joking about the WD. My wife will do more than hurt that leg if I go near the shop or equipment before the Dr. says it's OK. You can bet I'm gonna try to get all my haying done before I get the surgery then it's walk on the treadmill and around the house and maybe the yard till it's healed. It's hurt too long to mess it up/ Keith
