I always liked the looks of a JD new generation tractor with a narrow front end. For use I definitely prefer a wide front.

Cool pics,, I remember going to SD and going out on the then CASE dealers demos with Case 930's and putting the 4020's to shame chopping,, they just did not lug and pull like a CASE engine does, JD and CASE in that area both had good dealers then and sold about the same numbers,, today JD is for sure selling more there as they are the only dealer close,, good folks too I buy most any CASE they take on trade I want to add a JD dealer in Haver MT helped me and a good friend fellow CASE collector a few years back by letting us park a couple tractors there for a few days, I called the cih dealer down the street first,, they said NO WAY can you park that old junk on our lot,, the next call to the JD dealer was 180 different they were very gracious and would not take a penny for for the use of a couple spot on the lot,, if I did not run CASE I would be running green,, never will you see a red painted machine in my fleet ever

Old machines from the early 70's or earlier. Old technology. 34 works best with corn/feed silage, not so much for haylage as it is cut and throw, not cut and separate blower. Cannot run a recutter screen on 34. Some conditions require a recutter screen.

Move on to a JD short knife cutterhead machine.

The 34 pulls much harder than the 35. I started farming with a 35 and did lots of custom work with a 4020 and 2 row head. We chopped so much that we wore the cutterhead door through. I replaced that 35 with this one that had only filled 2 12x40 silos and had never had the knives sharpened. I also have a 3940 which we did most of the chopping with untill we sold the dairy cows. It does pull easier than the 35 and we like the small knives for chopping hay as you can replace one or two easy when stone damaged. We now just let the hay head on the 3940 and use the others for corn silage and sorghum. I also have a 12 with a 6ft direct cut head we chop small grain silage with. Tom

Very nice, Tom. I'm guessing you had as much or more time in greasing, servicing, hooking up, and then cleaning up as you did time chopping. Hope it was fun!

It has a two row head in corn that is yeilding about 25 ton to the acre. It also has the fuel really turned up and I was showing off some. That tractor will run like that all day and the temp guage will never get above normal. It was my big tractor for years and when overhauled it we used an M&W engine kit. Tom

It was fun but you are correct about the time spent greasing, sharpening knives and setting shear bars.It took a long time just to put it all away when we finished. I have always enjoyed chopping more than anything else on the farm. I enjoy sharing them with others as well. Tom

where did the Allis fit in? Neighbor has a 780 that hasn't done much actual chopping. I don't need it, other than using it for what you did.
My good choppers are a NH 900 and a 3 row Fox self propelled. I also have a NH 707 3pt, and Fox and Papec one row pull behinds that I have never used; just thought of maybe having a harvest day sometime, now that the dairy cows are gone.
