What can you guys tell me about the herbicide Triclopyr.
You may know it by Remedy or Garlon 4.
I found it at my local TSC for $37 a quart for 61%.

I am trying to kill; among other things a invasive tree called the Chinese Tallow in fence rows.
I have looked at a couple state university sites and they recommend this herbicide.

John, I've used Remedy with diesel with emulsifier & surfactant and had good results on smaller trees. Bigger trees take some extra work. We have had a real problem with them on the Tx. coast, and they will take over a place quick. On the positive side, they will make the BEST honey.....nothing comes close, IMO. I use at least 5 gal. of honey a yr. for many yrs. and there is nothing like it. Good luck, they are a challenge.

true about the honey but they are a nuisance. I had them on my place in Robinson and here. finally was bale to get rid of them by digging and mowing.

Help me out here. When you say ...makes the best honey.. that means by bees collecting their nectar? You can actually tell a difference in the flavor of the honey if these plants are near the hive?

I don’t know about the Chinese Tallow Honey, but yes you can defiantly taste the difference between different types of honey.

Find a local bee keeper / honey shop, they usually let you sample before you buy... well maybe not in these nnalert times.
Grant.

I can remember as a teenager in th early 70’s people planting these trees. They grow fast and have pretty fall colors. Not a problem when you have a suburban lot that is cut every week to prevent new seedlings. But they are everywhere now and hard to get rid of. They will even tolerate salt water spray on the coast.

I plan on cutting the bigs ones down and spraying the regrowth over and over. I really don’t want to take the fence out to be able to dig them out.

When you cut them off spray the stumps. Get them sprayed within a few minutes after being cut. Check the label but if I remember correctly the rate for cut stump method is 15% Remedy in diesel. The small ones just spray the stems from the ground up about 12-16”. This is how we treat mesquite and mixed brush. Check the label in case there’s a different recommendation for tallow. Tony

Triclopyr is the expensive stuff included with 2-4-D in Crossbow.

Local Ag agent tells me that Crossbow (not 2-4-D alone) will kill dogbane IF ALL conditions are right.

Bought a gallon recently to experiment with new small 3 Pt. sprayer.

Mounted sprayer for first time Saturday and filled tank 1/2 full with water in order to set-up and adjust. Thankfully, I did not add expensive chemicals as adjusting regulator on new, unused sprayer made no difference on pressure. Increasing engine (PTO) RPM would increase pressure to 100 PSIG regardless of position of regulator. Pushed 10-15 gallons of water throuch 50 gallon/12' boom sprayer while experimenting for 15-20 minutes. Not happy, as sprayer, though unused, is now out of warranty. Think that regulator is stuck but dealer not open until Tuesday and will not have regulator in stock.

Once things worked out, will post back with results of Crossbow on dogbane.

If Crossbow does not work will try Milestone.

ohn, I have used many herbicides over many years, on all kinds of vegetation and when others fail, I go to Brushmaster, and it has never failed me. If there is something that it won't kill, I haven't found it.

I looked at Crossbow; and while it is cheaper per quart it is more expensive per active ingredients.
Crossbow has 16% Triclopyr and Remedy is 60% Triclopyr from what I have seen.
So while it takes a quart of Remedy to treat a acre it takes 1.5 gallons of Crossbow.

I just hope Triclopyr is strong enough to kill these trees.

red man....the bees love Tallow tree nectar. You can tell the difference blind folded. We have used honey as a sugar replacement for many yrs. (as much as we can). I have tried most every kind of honey there is & nothing comes close. By the sound of wildflower honey, you would think it would be great, but it's strong and not even close to tallow....this is my opinion. I'm sure others have favorites. There is a ad on the Houston CL selling 5 gal. of tallow honey for $150.00

If I cut down a persistent tree, I use Tordon RTU on the stump. It comes in 1qt squeeze bottle with a nozzle on the end. Just squeeze it out on the stump. Works for me. Mark.

I have also bought Trimec.

Planning to use Trimec on lawn.

Have been told that Trimec is ineffective on dogbane.

Lots of creeping charlie in lawn.

Have been experimenting with hand held sprayer. Dicamba wilts it down but does not kill it. Comes back later in season or next year.

Have also been told that Tripchlor (SP?) is ineffective on Crepping Charlie so will not waste Crossbow on lawn.

May try Milestone next year.

John I think you will have trouble killing regrowth because now you have a small bush with a tree root mass.

My county drain commission the last I knew uses Garlon. Smokes brush and small trees.

Me over the years I have not been impressed with Crossbow. Mullberry bushes and trees are the tough one around here and crossbow struggles with them.

I bought some stuff on the net years ago called Vine-X. I wanted it to kill White Bryony around my yard. They took it off the market and now I wish I had bought a case of it. The active ingredient was triclopyr mixed with vegetable oil. That stuff is deadly as can be to any kind of woody vine. The oil base makes it soak right into the plant. After you put it on it soaks in and there's no way to reverse it. Bye Bye vine !!

I come up with the same numbers. I spray it on with a pump up sprayer. I guess you could use a brush but with the sprayer you won’t be bending over so much. How ever you choose make sure you get the cambium layer and the outside of the stump. Tony
