whats the story on the john deere 4520 tractors?
i see some with the regular engines and some with 4620 engines?
were there problems?

they seem priced a lot cheaper then 4020/4320/4620 tractors
so, what is the reason why? just a bad model?

any one use one or had one?

thanks

They had trouble with the air filters dumping dirt into the engines and some filters even caught on fire. I think they had trouble with fuel injectors too. Deere fixed them thats why the 4620 engine.Never had one but thats what I was told.

They might be going up now ? But back 20 + years you could get one for about 1/2 of what a 4020 would bring. Mainly because of the 1000 rpm pto only and they are alot heavier too.

As been pointed out, 4520 engines were problematic upon introduction. When JD introduced the 4620, they came out with a program for farmers with 4520s that could exchange the engine even if it was good for a 4620 engine with the only cost being the labor. In other words, lots of 4520 engines got swapped out for 4620 engines early on.

If you buy one get a 4620 or a 4520 that has the 4620 engine. My oldest son was shopping for a 4020 10 years ago and bought a 4520 with the 46 engine instead. The only drawback is the 1000 pto but for us on a dairy farm that was never an issue. We had ours running 170 hp. Ours is parked right now with a clutch issue and should get an overhaul. The late engines had the injection pump ran off the timing gears on the front of the engine rather than the oil pump. Most 4520's had the small injection pumps and parts are getting hard to get for them.Right now I can not locate any pics of mine with the roll guard and canopy. Tom

bil has one for a loader tractor. He says they make the best loader tractor because they are built so heavy and John Deere has always had strong reliable hydraulics. The thing is beat up almost beyond recognition but purrs like a kitten. He bought it used with a million hours on it and has never had engine apart. I don't know if his has 4620 engine or not.

The late original 4520 tractors had the tall better Roosamaster pump and we installed a few of those pumps on the early ones so the hp could be turned up, as that was part of the problem on the CB pumps could not turn them up. Somewhere i have the copy of our service invoice 4520 when the 4620 engine was installed
