New Holland baler

Any thoughts on a New Holland 268 square baler? $600. Always stored in side. Worked when parked. Bought round baler. Friend of mine is looking at it.

I grew up on a dairy farm and my dad bought a 269 (close to yours) brand new from the dealership. The salesman told him that he would get a free TV with his purchase, but dad didn’t believe him and forgot about that promise as soon as he got home. We baled many, many thousands of alfalfa bales with it, pretty much trouble-free. It was finally retired when big bales took over. It was an excellent baler.
BTW, about three months after my dad purchased it, the salesman drove up on our place with the free TV. It was a 12” tube TV that saw duty in our shop. My brothers and I watched Scooby Doo on it...while we worked on farm maintenance. We got a lot of use out of it also.

Hey Grandpa--- I had one -- it was an excellent baler once I got it all adjusted - the only thing is it did not like small windrows --it did its best when it was full and doing 55 strokes a minute ---- it was real good in alfalfa! so-so in grass! Once I got the knotters working that thing would bale all day and never miss -- so in a nutshell YES it is as good as any other brand - but it is only as good as it is set-up --- Roy

Dad had a 269, same horizontal feed system as a 268, vs the vertical feed chain like your 315 has. The 268/9 were notorious for making banana bales if they weren't fed the right windrow shape/volume. Personally, I would rather have a 270/271 with the vertical feed, over a 268 or 9.
On the other hand, $600 is a pretty small amount for a working baler.

Price a knotter frame or an input clutch, if the knotters are in good shape and the needles are ok .. you can scrap it and be ahead..
