Farmall M Questions

I am planning to do some updates to my 1939 Farmall M and I have a few questions to see if everything is correct on it.

1. I will be changing the oil and I am unsure what oil to use. The tractor is not used when it's really cold out. My dad fully restored the tractor and it used to be used in parades and family fun days around the field. That is all I really use it for anymore other than hauling some firewood. From the research I have done I have read to use 15w-40. It says it's for Diesel engines but I assume that doesn't matter?

2. Is there a way for me to check the level of the transmission fluid to make sure it's not low?

3. Are there any other fluid levels I should check on the M, other than the coolant? I've checked that and it looks good!

take your pick... 10-30,-10-40,20-50. or even the diesel 15-40 oil. everybody has there own reason to which oil they use. the tractor has
never seen such good oil when it was born. just take into account the weather temperatures and go from there.

Thanks! So if the tractor is mostly out in the summer and a few days in the Fall do you think 10w40 would be a good oil?

To check the transmission, there's a plug on the side of the housing below the clutch pedal. It should be filled to the level of the plug with 90w gear oil.

Pick an oil appropriate for the climate where you'll operate the tractor. 15W-40 is fine south of the Mason-Dixon line, but if you need your tractor to start in sub-zero weather a thinner oil such as 5W-40 or 10W-30 is a better choice.

I live in Central New York where we do see sub-zero temperatures and I use Walmart 15w-40 mixed fleet oil in my tractors year round.

I live in MN and temps get well below zero and all my tractors
get 15-40. My DC which would be comparable to your M runs
and starts fine on it.

15/40 'fleet diesel' is a good oil to use in everything. Or you can use the same oil as you use in
your pickup.Todays worst oils are better than the best oil when the tractor was made.Multi-viscosity
wasn't invented yet. So,about anything would by just fine for your tractor.BTW,try to find one oil
that you can run in everything,or at least your tractors. Less confusion or mixups that way.
