Lost my hydraulics this evening. Put gauge on and it showed 600 psi. I put a new pump on last fall. Plan on putting a new filter on in y morning. Any suggestions?
 
The stroke control valve is what controls the hydraulic pressure in the hydraulic pump of your 4240. If you are not familiar with it I would suggest finding someone who is. The stroke control valve can be removed by removing a plug with a set screw and jamb nut from the under side of the pump. This plug is in the control head of the pump and not one of the radial plugs in the pump body. With the plug, spring and valve removed, a very very brief engine start and shut off and then reinstallation of the plug should put you back in business. There is also a possibility the stroke control spring is broken. The brief engine start is to flush any debris out of the valve bore that may have caused the valve to hang up.
 

If your tractor happens to have a de-stroking screw(key 6) installed one can screw DS screw down/back up with engine operating & possibly obtain same results that Larry referred to without the oily mess of removing stroke control valve(keys 36-43). Which type trans does your tractor have? Will tractor still move when placed in gear & clutch engaged? I suggest to clean trans oil suction screen if it hasn't been cleaned lately.

TxJim...he said it had 600psi hydraulic pressure, so I assumed the trans end regardless of which trans option it had was not the culprit.
But I assumed and assuming does lead to making a fool of me from time to time, lol
 

I wasn't intending to imply anything about you.

I've learned from many yrs of diagnosing closed center hyd problems that one can't have ""too much information""" when attempting to solve CC hyd problems.
 
I loosened it and started the tractor a couple of times starting to loosened it then tightened it now I have 2000 pounds of pressure
