Farmall A Carb flooding

1947 Farmall A. Why is my carburetor flooding when I try to start the tractor. I don't choke it. I can try to start it over and over and after several tries it will finally start. Maybe after 20 minutes of trying. Gas actually drips on the floor After it starts it runs fine and does not leak. Then I can stop and start it easily after that. Maybe leave the fuel shut off until after it starts and then turn it on? Will that help? I don't think it should flood so easily.

When was the last time you serviced the air cleaner and dumped the mud and water out of it and fill it with fresh oil. Also pull the top cap off and with the oil bath cup off look down into it and make sure it is not full of mud dobber nests

If you crank the tractor much and it doesn't start the carb will drip gas for couple of moments. All the old Farmalls will do that. I think the question is why does it take some much cranking to get it
started. I would start with cleaning and the gaping the points and make sure you have good plugs with he proper gap. Also is your tractor a mag or distributor. Is it still 6 volts. Could be drawing so much
power to turn the engine there is not enough to get strong spark at the plugs. What are you using for plugs. You need at least a heat range higher than stated in the manual with today's gasoline.

If your float/needle valve is allowing gas by as it sets, it will accumulate where your intake hose attaches. When you try to start, a big glug of gas goes straight to the cylinders flooding the motor. Try taking the hose loose before starting and see what happens. Continued use like this will make your oil level raise and smell like gas. Don't ask me how I know.

I tried leaving the gas shut off valve turned off and it started right away. Then I opened the gas shut off valve after it started. I tried this several times and it started each time. It may start also if I don't turn the gas on until just before I start it. I think maybe the problem was that I forgot and left the shut off valve on over night. I just replaced the plugs with Champion D21 plugs. Thanks for everyone's help. I just bought this tractor a couple weeks ago and maybe need to learn more about it.

Make sure the carburetor bowl vents are open. Some gasket sets don't have an opening to alow the bowl to vent causing this problem.

I bet your float is deteriorated. Todays gasoline will cause those old copper floats to deteriorate. Get a new float as your float has sunk.

Could be the float or you left the gas on. Old tractors don't have a fuel pump, it uses gravity to feed it gas. Not running the carburetor will over fill with gas if the gas isn't turned off at the tank.
