What are the main causes of a coil heating up and shutting down? It is a 1010 JD. It has a new coil, new condenser and it still runs about 20 to 30 minutes. Gets hot and shuts down. Tonight I felt of the coil. It was pretty hot. Changed it with another coil I had and it started right up. Backfired from where I tried to start it without spark but fired right up. The voltage at the coil measured 6.9 volts. tried another resistor and it is 5.9 volts. I left this one on. Will 1 volt make much difference? Points are not very old but not brand new.

The voltage difference is dramatic if looked at as a % of voltage. If the points are adjusted to the correct gap, and the charging voltage when running at 3/4 throttle is ~14.2 to 14.7 it should work. Jim

I might have found the problem. Couple bad connections on the wire going from the resistor to the coil. One was so so. The one at the coil was down to 1 strand of wire. Changed the 2 ends and fired it up. Did not get hot in the 5 minutes or so I ran it. Will find out tomorrow.

es! That makes perfect sense....one strand, high resistance to current flow, makes coil hotter....go figure?

Measure the current through the coil . Is it closer to 8.0 Amos than 4.0 Amps ?
How hot is hot ? There is at least 25watts of heat creates in the coil . It will become very hot in the summer time close by the engine .
Do you have a thermal camera to measure the actual temperature ?
