Iowa winds?

I’m hearing of bad straight line winds in a pretty big area of Iowa, over 100mph in areas. Seeing some bad pics and hear a lot of crop down flat.

Hope everyone is safe.

Sounds like a Directo that hit me in 2013 here in Ohio and it started in Indiana ans all states toward the east of me here in western Ohio. Dammage as bad as a tornado with all power in several states out for quite a while. My late wife and I were cought in a Walmart as it went thru. No more warning than a tornado when it hit.

Up here we call them BLOWDOWN storms. Had one go through here a few years back. Was well over a mile wide at times. Started....I forget how far into Canada, then went for another long ways in MN. I think total it was over 100 miles. Blew down pretty much everything in its path, but all in the same direction. It missed our house by about 100 yards.

The corn was standing perfect till this afternoon. UGH! 45 acres that is a real mess. The rest doesn't look too bad. Glad that I'm 80 percent retired and only have 130 acres to run through this year. Middle of southeast Iowa - Mahaska county.

I just got back from the Cedar Rapids Iowa area. Lots of power lines down poles broke off, trucks flipped on their side, trees broke off and uprooted, corn flat, looks to be broke off, buildings damaged, traffic signs knocked down flat. Just east of the Hy-way 218 junction, the top ten feet of Harvestore silos are bent over at 90 degrees. I waited 1 hr and 15 minutes at the rest area south of Cedar Rapids for the storm to BLOW through. Didn't want to be 1 of those 18 wheelers laying on their side.

It just went through north Central Indiana. I still have power , TV said 80 MPH wind. joe

My daughter and her family live Pleasant Hill (by Des Moines). They had 75+ mph winds. Lost a bunch of shingles off of their house but everyone is fine. We were just there this past weekend.

We had a really bad wind like that once that I recall. 90 mph hour straight-line winds. Damage from about three towns away, to beyond our neighborhood.... so maybe 40 miles.

Those southwest of us got the worst of it.

Only time in our married life, that we grabbed the kids and all headed down to the basement. I was nervous that time.

The airports 5 miles east of me clocked 106 MPH. I lost some nice trees but no structures. One tree down on one of my pickups, bent the roof, hood, and broke the windshield. Lost part of the roof at my office building in town. I'm on generator now, they think two days before power is back on. All the electric poles from my place south about 5 miles are down. Corn couldn't be flatter if you ran over it with a paving roller. Lots of grain bins destroyed. I'll get some pics in the morning and post them if I have internet tomorrow.

I posted on this, did not see this one.

Easter Iowa is decimated, it looks like a hurricane came through.

i'm thinking maybe 20 years ago we had wind storm that in Stephenson co Il during fair week an empty grain rolled on its side for many miles lots of people with out electric for a few days what a mess if I live to be 100 I don't want to see a mess like that again.
Foreston Il had a mobile home park no more lots of damage to that little town.

Derecho also means straight ahead, in Spanish. It doesn't make sense but languages don't always make sense, especially English!

My BIL lives in Cedar Rapids. He reports 90 MPH winds and lots of trees down. Very little damage otherwise to his or daughters properties. All are OK. Pictures I've seen look like hurricane pictures, only dry. Been through a couple in Norfolk, Va. zuhnc

The one that went thru Va is what got me in western Ohio. Did not know how big it was untill saw it on weather chanel top 50 worst storms.
