Hello all, Im currently helping my father out with repair his MF230
Its a Diesel engine and were having trouble getting it to stay running.

We just serviced the injection pump and replaced the lift pump. We are pretty certain all the air has been bled, but it still does not stay running. For the most part it will only turn on with the help of starting fluids in the breather... but like I said it will not stay on.

Thanks everyone stay safe!

Was the tractor running ok before you worked on it? What do you mean when you say you 'serviced the injection pump'? Did you replace the fuel filter and if you did, was the replacement a Wix brand? Did the lift pump fail? Post all of the info that you can. Someone on here will help you figure it out.

The whole back story helps sometimes. Did it stay running before you serviced the injection pump? What exactly did you do to service the injection pump? People will ask what pump it has, please include that info.

Thanks for the response.

So the tractor ran fine up to a point where we suspected the injection pump was beginning to cause no start issues.

By having it serviced I mean that we took the pump off and had it rebuilt.

the fuel lift pump was replaced because the fittings were cross threaded into the housing.

The fuel filter is ordered and on its way.

So it stayed running ok before it was rebuilt, but started hard. Now it starts hard and won't stay running. Is this correct? You had the pump rebuilt by an injection pump shop? You have the pump back on and have started it, but have not changed the fuel filter. Get the filter changed, I would have done that first before hooking up a rebuilt pump.

Check for a possible restriction in the fuel system from the tank to the pump. I believe there is a screen inside the tank attached to the tank shutoff tap. Check to see that the fuel return line is not plugged or restricted. Try leaving the fuel cap loose to see that it is not pulling a vacuum in the tank (not likely from your description). Is the air filter clean? Is the fuel stop going all the way to the run position?

If the fuel system checks out ok it may be time to do a compression test.

FWIW, I had the same problem a few months ago on a 245 diesel, it would start but only ran a few minutes then wouldn't start. As Jim.ME mentioned it "could" be the strainer in the fuel shut-off on the tank. When I pulled it out it was clogged with all sorts of junk. I cleaned it out and it ran fine. I changed the filter first but it just wasn't getting enough fuel. Good Luck with yours!

There's also a little filter I call a thimble filter where the fuel line connects to the back of the pump. Mine wouldn't run and it was stopped up. You have to pull the line off them the pump fitting and it's in there.

the fuel filter has been replaced and we went through the injection pump and fuel lines once more over to check for any air in the system. The tractor was still hesitant to turn on unassisted. After a few attempts of starting fluid it fired up again has stayed running longer than previously before then it stopped

repeated the process for a second time and at the moment its at around 10 mins of running time.

had a buddy tell me its difficult to bleed the air out of the injection pump. Can anyone tell me the proper order of components to go over when bleeding.

thanks again everyone
